ok ive copied the file to the desktop,and changed the file for note pad excel and word ,word had the best result withs micro soft converter overing me several options to convert the file,
windows default,ms-dos,other encoding the last one showed the most info,but failed to make it readable.

What were the details from the file on DVD when you copied it to the desktop - In Windows explorer ....Right click on it and select properties , then the details tab under name it should say fred.xxx the xxx bit is the extension4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . It might be NAMED .doc but it might actually BE .docx.
But given what was said earlier, it looks more like it may be .xlsx. In which case the compatibility pack will still be needed by the OP.0 -

So renaming it .docx and opening from within Word (not double clicking) may still work.
If it's Excel then you'd need to rename it .xlsx
Just an odd thought - if you have WinZip or 7-Zip or similar, what happens if you right-click the file and select "Open Archive" ?0 -
