just tried opening the file with the above ext, tells me my file is invalid,

From this it definitely looks like it should be an Excel file, but the header looks like it has been corrupted.

You could try recovering it - From Excel, select Open and locate the file. Instead of clicking the Open button, click the down arrow beside it and one of the options should be Open and Repair.

But why would anyone format a 'manuscript' in Excel!? Can you not email your friend in Oz and ask him how he created it?
Have you copied the file to the desktop as previously suggested? It shouldn't make any difference trying to open it from the DVD in theory, but it can do no harm to try. Then once you have copied it, you can try renaming the fie to .xls.
If you have MS Office, then you have Excel. So just right click on the file and use Open With' and select Excel. or open Excel and then open the file from within the program.
Thisis not a Conpatability Pack issue, as you have confirmed that the file is .doc. So any version of Word should do the job.
