a friend typed up a manuscript for me and put it onto dvd , unfortunately they have screwed it up and it now reads as gobble de gook! see below

How can they not know what program they created it in? What WP software do they use? However, MS Word should open most file extensions. Unless they've created it in something like MS Works.
The file extension is the last part of the file name (after the dot). So for example, manuscript.docx or manuscript.rtf. Tell us the filename and we'l tell you what you need to open it.
If you are trying to open it from the DVD, try copying it to your desktop first.
Have you tried opening it from within MS Word, rather than just double clicking on the file?

Try opening the file with NOTEPAD and see if there is anything intelligible in it. If you can read anything in English, see what characters are right at the very front of the file - the first dozen would be more than adequate.

Can your friend open the file in whatever software they used to type it up in? Easiest will be for them to export it again, in a useable format
