Why has my toolbar changed?

I continue to have major problems with my computer - slowness, spontaneous shutdowns etc, but limp along with it as best I can.
The Speed Up your Computer guide here does not rectify matters.
Sometimes it is so slow I go into Cambridge Library to book things quickly.
Yesterday it shut itself down again, with big blue page densely written in white, sentences about dangerous errors, fatal risks, self-repairing etc.etc.
I have started it twice since, with requirement for 'disk security checks' taking ages before finally I'm able to use it.
I wanted to check the Tesco rewards page, but no matter what, received only this:
ERROR:
Unexpected error occurred.
All lateral thinking tries failed. so I rang Tesco. They suggested I try it via IE, rather than google/chrome. Still no good.
Computer crashed again.
I re-started it. Since last night, it now gives me a BTYahoo toolbar, something I didn't know existed, although all my usual tabs are there.
I still can't get through to the Tesco Rewards page though.
Just phoned them again, but there is no reply at the section who deal with such things.
Can anyone help please?

I am no expert and I am sure someone with more knowledge will be along shortly but have you tried system restore to an earlier date?
Funnily enough I had a bit bother yesterday with Tesco Rewards site but I think this was because the points were being taken off to make way for the new vouchers. Working today though."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

terryw - thankyou. I'm still trying any way I can think of to get to that page. I just have that error message still.
It's nothing to do with the qtrly statement cut-off though. Went through all of that with the Tesco girl yesterday. It was working for her.
Did system restore a fortnight ago. No change. No improvement.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

Have you run a decent virus check recently? Do this & then disk clean up & defrag the drive.
Sounds like you downloaded a programme which offered a tool-bar as part of the set up. These usually have a tick box which you MUST uncheck to avoid this. They work on the principal that most people do not properly check things. They also track your internet habits.
The blue screen of death however is not good at all. You may have to get your PC checked by an expert. Meanwhile whenever you can get it working you need to back up all your important stuff as you may need to re-format the drive.
You could try Firefox as a browser but make sure you read the installation process and uncheck the option for XXX toolbar.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0 -
Sorry that I can't help more. I have had bother with unwanted toolbars before and it is a right pain.
This post will act as a bump for a passing expert to assist."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Thankyou Mrs A - what do you suggest as a decent virus check prog?
I've done nothing to make invasion happen. Never do. Am also manic about reading closely, unticking/ticking et al.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:
