The banks can levy charges, and take all usual action to get them paid.

What they are not supposed to do is grab benefits and make them unavailable for a person to live on.

God what have i started here? is this the labour party or conservative im not quite sure.

As minimadtrix pointed out to you half brained jumped up opinionated do gooders, dont tarnish everyone with the same brush who is on benefits.

I paid extortionate taxes after earning 150 grand a year for 10 years so i think it only fair do's that now i need support, i get it!

As for the bank charges it was a dd set up error by currys for £2.99 to which didnt get paid therefore resulting in a £39 bank charge.

Firstly i never set the dd up and secondly the charges are due to go out of my account the day my benefit goes in therefore leaving me £17.00 to live on for a week with 5 kids......like to see you do it on £56 let alone £17.00

Currys are apologising and looking in to it but wont refund the occured bank charges till they have finished there investigations and the bank has said i can reclaim the charges through the court they will not refund.

So as stated before dont be quick to judge......thank you

Genuine question here - If you are on benefits and incur a charge and the bank are not allowed to take it from your benefit how do they get it back (not talking stupid fees but ordinary ones like agreed overdraft/interest fees) or are people on benefits not allowed o/d's.

Hmmm, only apply the rules when it suits? The whole point of forums is that you get differing views. If you just want people to agree with you, talk to the mirror.

Oh, and how did you expect to get decent advice when you only gave 1/10th of the story?

Perhaps you'd now like to remove your insults to other moneysavers?

I have been on benefits and incurred bank charges, it never occured to me that I could refuse to pay the charge just because I am on benefits.
If only I'd known I could have got away with these charges I would have run up more. :T

I'm guessing that they would have to accept you paying a little amount each week rather than the whole amount as applies with other debts.

Yes, that is what they are supposed to do - they are obviously entitled to charge for overdrafts etc., but they are not entitled to do a grab-back of benefits leaving a person with nothing to live on.

Or they could just let a person get deeper and deeper into debt with more and more charges and then ask for them back all at once.

And why should they? Why should everyone else pay for your inability to maintain a credit balance?

blimey i only came on here today and i think that is a silly comment taken that a vast majority on this site are here to claim back charges from banks for not keeping thier account in credit i take it your not one of them, we all work in my house hold and i have done since i was 15 years old and i have still run into problems with my bank , you are either very rich or had a help up with a start in life which the rest of us mere mortals have not, for me it has been hard work for 23 years and no parents to help me out and on my own from the age of 16 so never had the chance to get savings and the like, and if everyone had your attitude there would be no need for martins bank charges crusade would there????????
:rotfl: it's all making my head spin!!!!!!
