Conor, as correctly stated by aj3001, the insurers ask if the customer is the registered owner/keeper. If they have indicated they are when dvla records indicate they are not, then the insurance is invalid. I know this for a fact because I once forgot to update the details of a car I recently bought, a few weeks later I got a letter from the insurance stating the policy had been cancelled/invalidated as I was not shown as the registered keeper.

Of course, had I not said I was the registered keeper, then my insurance would have been valid.

    Not actually correct!
What insurers actually need to see is that whoever is trying to insure the car has an "insurable interest" in the vehicle. Asking whether the car is registered in your name is an easy, but not the only way of determining that.

There are other circumstances where you do have an insurable interest as an individual but are not the registered keeper, company ownership, lease arrangements etc.

That having been said it is the correctness of the answer to the insurers questions that matters!

My advice from my previous post still stands, take legal advice.
As "DealDrivers" suggests this whole affair has a ring of suspicious goings on. It has a lot of the signs of a pre-registration to a party advantageous to the garage.
