Why would she not be insured? If the registration number is correct then there should not be a problem with insurance.

Insurance normally ask who is the registered keeper of the vehicle, at quote time, the answer was probably the daughter.

Indeed, the daughter is NOT the registered owner and keeper as the insurance certificate says, therefore she is not covered until that car is in her name!

I would imagine the dealership would be happier to take money off the sale price than to take back a car they will have to sell as pre-registered with a small amount of mileage. But it's their mistake and they shoud correct it without a previous owner being registered if possible, or pay for the error or take the car back - and do it themselves as noone is legally entitled to drive the car except the dealership which will have a special insurance policy.

Don't worry, admin errors do happen.

The same thing happened to us.

As soon as we received the document from DVLA we returned it immediately to them along with a simple letter of explanation.

They sorted it out very quickly, & my wife is now shown as the first owner.

why should we be doing that
    The dealership made the error
Don't forget who the customer is

Sometimes it's easier to do things yourself. Why waste your time chasing the dealership when you can quickly call/write to the DVLA.

How have your conversations gone with the dealership today?
  • The dealership should absolutely be correcting this immediately with the DVLA and asking for no record of changed ownership to be shown on the new V5, if it was sold to her as brand new, 1st and only owner.

Are you sure the dealership didn't present this car and price as a pre-registered vehicle?

Is the other name it has been registered in a company name maybe (rather than a private individual's name)? If it is a company name I'll have a tenner with you they've pre-registered it and sold it on sooner than allowed.

It takes a massive foul-up on an administrator's desk to register it to the wrong name and address and, as 107's are hardly selling in droves, they'd hardly have been overworked at the time, and I'm sure they managed to invoice it to the correct name and address?! let us know...(...call me cynical...but I've been doing this way too long!)

I would advise correcting it quickly as she is not insured because of this mistake

Utter rubbish. You don't have to be the registered keeper to be insured or get insurance for a vehicle.

Conor, as correctly stated by aj3001, the insurers ask if the customer is the registered owner/keeper. If they have indicated they are when dvla records indicate they are not, then the insurance is invalid. I know this for a fact because I once forgot to update the details of a car I recently bought, a few weeks later I got a letter from the insurance stating the policy had been cancelled/invalidated as I was not shown as the registered keeper.

Of course, had I not said I was the registered keeper, then my insurance would have been valid.

    errrrrr yes you do.

Its one of the questions you are asked when you take out a policy. No problem if you told them that you were not the registered keeper, but then they load the premium, and the op would not have told them as she was not aware.
