Could anybody please help
My daughter bought a new car Friday.
She was given registration documents with another persons details on.
Was assured the car was registered in her name, it was just an admin error.
We now find out that it isn't as we were told, the car is registered to somebody else.
This has taken the shine off her first car
What is the next course of action, and what legally can she do?????

When you say new is it brand new or new to her?

If new to her, was it a garage or individual that sold it to her?

The only registration documents you should have have is the green slip with your details on (handwritten by the seller). The rest is sent off to the DVLA by the seller. The DVLA then send you the new documents through the post a few weeks later.

Get the car registered in her name and then claim a partial refund from the garage for the additional 'past keeper' that the car will now have registered against it.

Or return the car and get them to issue a refund as it was not as sold (IMO a car with a previous keeper recorded against it as in this case is not brand new - regardless of how many miles are on the clock/how many or few people have driven it!).

Keep calm and check with the garage - I think that there may be a grace period during which it can be amended for mistakes.

Last new car I bought they sent me a print out showing how they were going to register the car and asking me to sign to say that all was correct like spelling of name etc. I just assumed that all garages did this now, but obviously not!

Can you tell us the car, model etc. If so we may be able to give you some advice regarding what it would have cost had it been pre registered - this in turn would give you an idea as to what to ask for as a discount from the dealer if they cant change the details. If you are not happy with that then I cant see why you couldnt reject the vehicle as it is not as described i.e. not first and only registered keeper.

I would advise correcting it quickly as she is not insured because of this mistake

There is no "period of grace", the registration will remain as stated by the DVLA.

You would be better obtaining legal advice as to your position with the garage, the car not being registered to your daughter opens a can of worms!!

Does your/her home insurance have a free legal advice phone line? If it does use it!
Fiscally responsible or just a tight git? :

Thanks very much for everyones replies

To plane_boy2000 the car is Peugeot 107 & cost £5800
the insurance at the moment is 7 days free from Peugeot
    no legal cover

hopefully the details on the car can be amended before printing at dvla
If not, I think a new car will have to be ordered

    once again thank you
but any more advice would be grateful

Why would she not be insured? If the registration number is correct then there should not be a problem with insurance.
