I was going to suggest a token from Spaceform as seen on sites like this one:

    www.bonkers-standrews.co.uk/acatalog/Spaceform.html

(Not endorsing it btw because there's probably cheaper elsewhere :))

But after reading the above, I think I'd prefer the ready made food and favours :D

LOL- Mr Spendless had to throw away a shirt when our youngest did this to him straight after her bath!

 how long before it stops staining? i've got 3 packs of disposables (free with coupons from baby mags bought with coupons from emma's diary packs lol!), 28 in each pack, is that enough? lol!! also bought some newborn bambino mio nappies, well used, off ebay so i don't suppose it matters if they get ruined as they're not in good enough condition to pass on to anyone else.

what about a bottle of bubbly? or i think a babysitting voucher would also make a nice present to the parents, if all this talk of nappies hasn't put you off the idea of babysitting :rotfl:

It was the black 'tar' stuff that they poo when newborn that stained. Forget correct word for it. IIRC it lasts for a few days. I was in 5-6 days with my 2 due to have c-sections. By time I was out they were doing ordinary poos. You've probably got enough disposible packs.

Depends on baby's body before all the meconium (tar poo) has gone. Took my son 5 days I think, but can be up to a week? I may be wrong though..? Was living in a dream the first few weeks of baby's life! Nappy change every 2 hours by day, inbetween sleeps at night...you'll need about 10 nappies a day.

As for Bambino Mio, found there wasn't much point for these for my son in the early days. Runny newborn poo leaks out the side of the covers immediately. He needed a change of clothes within seconds of pooing. Cover needed a wash everytime, so only 4 nappy changes could be reusables...Pampers coped with the rest! Am happier using Bambinos now that the poo is solid and less frequent!

ahhh ... i've not used washables before so this is all great advice :-) i've also got kooshies that could be used for small babies if needed, and enough disposables for at least 10 days i think so it should be okay. i've got extra wraps in small size so if my newborn size bambinos aren't enough to cope with runnyness i could use the other wraps too, as long as poo isn't staining lol! gosh we're a refined lot on this site, discussing poo stains on a thread about baby gifts lol! so yes, a bag of disposables probably would be appreciated by pretty much anyone, as long as you find out the weight of the baby, some babies are too large for newborn size apparently. same with clothes, my last friend to have a baby was given loads of gorgeous newborn clothes but the baby was too big for them, and as most people would remove the price tag before giving they can't be returned and swapped for the next size up.

As a soon to be new mum, a few of the things we never thought about until we started equiping our new nursery:

Rechargable batteries & charger (do you know how many a monitor takes?!)
Rotary washing line & over-radiator airers
    Tons of towels
Storage systems & cupboard locks ('Cos you'll never fit it all in & you'll need to lock them shut so nothing falls out ...LOL)
Socks (They only have 2 feet for crying out loud, yet everyone keeps asking us if we've got enough baby socks? Presume this will come clear in time, until then we have 16 pairs of socks. Will this be enough I wonder?)
Good quality coffee & mid night snacks for the parents. Maybe even a teasmade? (If you're going to be awake at all hours you might as well have some comfort, however small!)

    HTH:D
Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!

I always think the best present to buy is a big bag of nappies! New mum's never realise just how many they are going to go through. You know the kid is going to have loads of clothes and toys, people just can't help themselves. Buy them something practical!

That was one of the best presents I got, a huge box of nappies delivered from a friend who worked with a company that supplied them to the shops.

The one thing I could of done with and didn't get was plain and simple vests, had to go to the chemist and buy some ;)

Aaahh but baby socks are magical. They wear two, you wash a two and you're left with one ....until 3 months later when the other one turns up at the bottom of the laundry basket, or inside a babygro...or under the passenger seat of the car..... by which time the baby has grown out of them.

    I consider baby sock disposable!

The best thing I received before I had eldest was a layette box filled with things like pack of nappies, maternity pads, breast pads, nail clippers, vests, scratch mits and so on.

Last year I filled same layette box for hubbys cousin just before she had first. I was able to walk round our house looking thru cupboards and discovering un-opened items of above, scratch mits still with tag on (unused), unopened pack of baby rice (well in date) etc. An ex-avon rep had even given me unopended make up and that went in as well for the mum.
