it.s obviously a mental health issue. she must also be displaying far more symptoms and issues than just being inable to walk outsoors though, if she receives higher rate for both.

a diagnosis probably does assist in an award to a degree. if only to enable the DM to see what issues the claimant may have.
so i't's more of a toll to help the DM rather than something that makes an award a foregone conclusion

She doesn't appear to have other symptoms and tells everyone that her only condition is that she is unable to walk outdoors. She hasn't had a medical since 1988, when she had her benefits stopped, then reinstated on appeal. She hasn't had a face to face assessment since then.

Firstly you can get DLA for depression/anxiety, and if you are struggling then you should apply. However many people are put off by the form.

While you can't claim DLA specifically for help with chores, you can receive the care element based on needing help/assistance when the depression is at its worse.

My friend claims DLA and uses the money to employ a child minder/cook/cleaner to help with her two children so she can have a break, she also has help for herself to wash.

The award is yours to use as you wish. Even if you just need someone to help remind you to get up and take your meds you may qualify for a low rate of DLA. I commend your Doctor in supporting you in a claim. This will help your application.

Don't forget to make an appointment with the CAB or a mental health organisation such as MIND. They will support you with your application and be an enormous support.

I suffer with severe depression and anxiety, having done so for quite a few years. I receive ESA and DLA payments each month. As others have mentioned you need to explain to DWP how your health condition(s) affect your everyday life.

The forms you need to fill in are complex and not for the faint-hearted. I would strongly suggest you consult a local welfare rights officer or join a website that provides you with information on how to complete these forms (for example, search for benefitsandwork using a search engine). The first time I filled out the form I got it wrong and received a 'no', but with some assistance I was awarded DLA and ESA. Include as many supporting letters as you can from friends/family. You can't provide too much supporting information to DWP.

You need to describe your condition honestly, but please don't leave out details of your difficult moments because they are possibly embarrassing. This is where you will gain enough points to receive an award.

Finally, be ready for a long journey as it may take some months before a decision is made.

    Good luck!
