Does anyone get DLA for depression/anxiety

  • DLA never has been about illness or diagnosis etc unless you count a terminal illness like cancer that is likely to result in your dying inside of 6 months.
It truly is about mobility and care needs at differing levels. PIP is only being tried in one area and will not go live for new claims until Oct this year. So DLA is still what you apply for.

A"diagnosis"doesnt have care needs nor mobility needs

    tetraplegia/quadraplegia definitely does

There's a lady in my road hasn't walked outdoors for about 20 years. Doctors have never given her a diagnosis and she walks normally in the house.

She says nobody knows why she can't walk outdoors and that she gets full DLA at both the care and mobility higher rates.

it.s obviously a mental health issue. she must also be displaying far more symptoms and issues than just being inable to walk outsoors though, if she receives higher rate for both.

a diagnosis probably does assist in an award to a degree. if only to enable the DM to see what issues the claimant may have.
so i't's more of a toll to help the DM rather than something that makes an award a foregone conclusion

    it's 6 months for PIP.
im not sure if PIP is being trialed in certain areas or has already rolled out nationwide?
    maybe someone can amswer that.
if it has rolled out then it wouldnt be DLA that the OP is looking to apply for, but PIP
It's being trailed in certain areas now and they expect to roll it out nationwide in June 2013.

Thank you for all your kind words. Due to domestic abuse and other things that have happened to me over the years I slipped further and further into depression and earlier this year suffered a nervous breakdown so had my antidepressants increased, but on anxiety tablets and sleeping tablets and referred to the mental health clinic. I am a single mum of 3 young children I also lost both part time jobs I had, one job I was self employed doing book keeping from home and this came to an end because the company lost business. The other job was at my local school during lunch times but the min I took two weeks off after my anxiety attack they wouldnt take me back so I have become jobless as well, so the money worries doubled all my other problems and my depression became worst. My mum lives two doors down from me and has been coming round every day to walk the children to school and to do some chores around the house because I become so bad all I do is sit and cry all day and have the shakes from the anxiety. I cant even go out the house as I either end up bursting out crying if anyone says hello or I get so anxious I feel sick and have to go back in the house.

I know to a lot of you who have never suffered depression/anxiety all this must sound completely pathetic, but I am getting all the support from the dr and councelling I need but its going to take a long time for me to get better or learn the strategies I need to get back in control of my life. At the moment I am struggling to make ends meet and after rent and houshold bills I am left with £60 a week to feed/clothe my 3 children and other things like school trips etc. I have cut back on every single bill I can and certainly do not have anything excessive or any debts. I feel so guilty that my elderly mother is looking after me but I feel so ill all the time, I cant eat and I have lost a stone in weight and Im only tiny anyway so now im about 6 1/2 stone.

It was the dr that recommended I apply for DLA as a bit of help in the meantime until I am feeling better.

It's not pathetic and I'm glad you're getting support from your GP and mum.

Have you had a look at the Old Style board?
There's nothing they don't know about stretching the pennies. Do have a look - they are a lovely friendly group of people :)

It is certainly not pathetic! depression is an illness, just as diabetes is (for example).

Please note that you cannot get DLA for needing domestic help, it is for personal care/supervision that you need.

Poor you. I hope the meds help soon and you get proper support. It is going to be hard, but hopefully you will see the light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck. Deep depression is horrible.

When you feel stronger you need to pop over to the budgeting boards as they can help. With 3 children and your maintenance from your ex you should be able to have more than £15 pppw to feed/clothe.

Regarding your DLA I can't respond as have no idea, but as others have said its based on care needs.
