re:raising the age (posted on the opther damn duplicate thread by mistake)

They are only raising it in 2015 because the first lot of girls vaccinated against HPV will reach screening age (20) in 2015. So theorectically they will have less chance of getting it. BUT that doesn't account for all the girls who never had the HPV vaccine-they will be pretty much denied the test.

You are entitled to your opinion but all of the letter sent out have not made out such a screening is optional, only a small paragraph in the provided leaflet does. I don't think young women under 25 should be treated in such a manner.

So what did you assume? That if you didn't go you would be reported to the police and arrested? You want us to believe that you are educated enough to decide that the evidence doesn't support the testing but too stupid not to realise that sreening is optional because it is not actually stipulated in bold on the letter?

Age is the issue, smear tests are not given on your sexual activity status but on your age., In Scotland it's 5 years lower than the rest of the UK.
Like I said - maybe research has shown that, in general, girls in Scotland are sexually active at an earlier age. Teen pregnancy rates would be a good indicator.

I'm afraid to say that says more about your ability to read and understand what is in fact a very clear and simple pamphlet than any fault of the Scottish screening system tbh. And you say you've recieved several such letters? Did you actually read any of them properly? Because if you did, I fail to see how you could possibly imagine that screening was in any way compulsory.

I need a letter saying.. 'get your big pink furry behind to the surgery for a smear before you drop dead' ... I am a putter-offer... I am a bit mad for sure.. but it should be compulsory IMO.. if only to save the NHS vast amounts of money in cancer treatments.

I'd give my daughters a jolly good ear bending if they refused to go.. I have done to several friends and other relatives, including my youngest sister and she whined 'but I don't want to'.. I replied and 'I don't want to come to your funeral matey'

I had my first smear at 17.. and I am a bit late with the next one as they won't do them while you're pregnant so it'll have to wait.

That's what I thought. Goodness knows which of the two threads I made this inference on! Thanks.

    I've been Money Tipped!
If nothing else it might help OP to learn that if this reads as 'compulsory' she is going to have to dodge various scams and unnecessary but legitimate businesses with much more robustness.

I am having my first smear for a regrettably long time (ten years I think) this week. It's not been too hard to call surgeries and tell them why I haven't been attending smears so they don't worry too much about me. But I am looking forward to either getting an all clear or addressing any problem arising from it. It's not dignified a procedure but its significantly less 'invasive' than other standard things. I suppose its a little embarrassing, but I also know the nurse has more to worry about than my pubic hair style or anatomy and will probably not think about my nether regions until next smear. :).

TBH the tone of the OPs reactions to what she claims to have been sent rather suggest that she flies into a panic, and perhaps is not then able to properly absorb what she's reading.

I just can't help thinking of Jade Goody when a post like this comes up, and think how her life may have been saved if she had only gone for regular smears.
Do we know for sure that she did not attend for smears? She probably had enough money to get private health checks and treatment. I think Jade was very unlucky. She had a particularly aggressive fast-growing cancer.

So there is a leaflet accompanying the letter which states its not compulsory.

As an adult, if you have any intelligence at all, you must be aware that no medical procedure is compulsory.

So again, whats the big deal? You got some letters, you don't want to attend the appointments, so don't attend. Call/write to the clinic and tell them.
