My Mondeo was a 52 plate when I bought it at 4 years old. It lasted me 3 years until I had to effectively scrap it.

It was repair bill after repair bill after repair bill. Swirl plates on the intake manifold, various sensors throughout the car, switches, motors, suspension work, every MOT was a failure, various electrical gremlins, almost annual requirement for a new coil pack, handbrake cables. Mine met its end over an aircon compressor. It burnt out after the system sprang a sudden leak. The cost to repair would have been £1500 (quoted by an indie) or £2000 (quoted by Ford). However, neither would offer warranty for the work; I even had to call around three Ford dealers before I found one who would be willing to take on the job.

I would no way buy another one! In the last few years, I've ran into several other previous Mk3 Mondeo owners on my travels who seem to tell similar tales. One thing breaks and by the time you've fixed it, something else is broken. In fact, there are a few Mk4 owners at work already talking similar sob stories.

I only know two Vectra owners, both petrol. Although I think the Mondeo is the nicer car to be in, the fact that the Vectra owners don't seem to moan speaks volumes.

If it was my money, I'd go for an older German or Japanese car myself. These cheap boxes are a false economy, unless you're talking about a supermini - fiesta or corsa type!

Seen a few new members on the Ford forums saying they have a vauxhall and it was a problem after problem so bought a Ford instead.

I guess the Vauxhall forums are the same, Ex Ford owners who bought the wrong one.

Just think of Triggers broom. Replace the handle and the head many times over, But its the same broom.

Cars are the same, They are built in bits so you can replace them all one after the other :)

I worked in the car trade for nearly 10 years and have had both, and for me the Mondeo wins out over the Vectra. As one of the earlier posters said, if I had a choice I would go for a 2.0 over a 1.8, but that may just be being picky.

Not picky the 2L is the best for reliablility. Had zero issues with mine.

Before i bought my 1st Mondeo a MK2 P reg i sat in a Vectra and thought, Oh my doom and gloom. A wall of blackness.

I sat in (well its was more of a sat on) the seat of the newer model Vectra 2003?
The seat was like sitting on the old wooden school chairs. A flat hard board with no give.

I replaced my Mondeo with a 10 year old Mercedes A-Class - reportedly the most unreliable car in history.

Apart from servicing, the odd suspension component, never let me down!
