Bought an 03 Mondeo 1.8 LX 5 door at auction last night.

'03, 64K miles, FSH, all old MOTs, current MOT, silver, 5 door, alloys, electrics, aircon, steering controls, cd player for £700 including fees.

    Cant be bad?

Just keep an eye on the oil burning issue that seems to affect some 1.8's

I nearly bought one myself. tested it several times and no smoke from the exhaust. When the dealer dropped the price without a struggle and offered me more for my part ex then offered free tax i had to look again.

Oddly this time when i blipped the throttle smoke came from the exhaust.

I couldnt give him the keys back fast enough.

Funny you should mention that. I hadnt come across this before but i was looking at an 02 one on a local online trade auction i use and they described it as 'smokey on startup'. Hadnt heard of the issue before.

    Seems to affect 1.8's only.

Also check the manifold swirl flaps. If they make any noise get a new manifold or renew / remove the flaps. The bar can breakup and they go into the engine.

Nice car Paul. I don't do many family cars anymore but are they 3 series alloys on that Mondie?

They're actually off a Jaguar X Type! I think they suit it quite well. Wouldnt have rushed out to do it, but they came on it and its better than the original wheel trims.

Swirl Flaps were/are only a problem on the 1.9 16v diesel, I was a member of the Vectra C club and the general view is that the 1.8 petrol engines are very good and pretty much trouble free.

Thats nice but what has it got to do with his Mondeo where the 1.8 and 2L have the swirl flaps? :D
