Lazy and f3ckless young who use txt spk 2 apply 4 jbz

A damning indictment of millennials. This should go down well on this forum...

Young people have ‘unrealistic expectations’ of the job market - with most saying they only want a job if it is in popular culture, media or sport, a damning report reveals today.
Many employers are desperate to recruit, but say they are confronted by candidates who apply for jobs in ‘text speak’ and cannot even turn up punctually for an interview, according to the report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Many young people do not read or understand the eligibility criteria for the jobs they apply for, employers said.

On a trip to a school in Liberia in February, children told him they would like to become doctors, lawyers and government ministers.

Mr Cameron joked: ‘If you ask children in the UK, all they want to be is pop stars and footballers.

Youths near you, earlier today

Of course, the consequences of having a consumer economy that relies on breeding new consumers into being complete morons stupid enough to buy an endless round of total junk is probably not going to be that conducive to unearthing high achievement.

The other thing this specious article also fails to point out is that most of these jobs are part time gigs working for the likes of Chicken Cottage; usually with an optimistic 'Graduate preferred' suffix on the application.

I was thinking the other day actually about the poor spelling i see on things like facebook

'Dat' used for 'that' or 'wiv' instead of 'with'. Are they genuine errors? Or some sort of slang type alternative?

Has it occurred to anyone that these children haven't been taught how to apply for jobs?

Over the years I've been teaching some teenagers I know how to apply for jobs.

They have an advantage over these children that they are wise enough to realise you don't use text speak with older adults but they still don't know how to write CVs, write covering letters and complete application forms.

Edited to say: There parents are older than me so don't know a lot about the current job market, and asking teachers who have only applied for teaching jobs isn't much help.

I had to read that twice! :D:o.

The last batch of yoof CVs that DH had to read over were appalling.

Where there wasn't text speak there were howling grammatical and spelling errors on every single one - and DH rejected the lot.

He's also interviewed youngsters who 'won't do' shift work because they want 'chillin' time' - seriously.

This country is raising a very strange, under-educated and inward-looking generation and it can only be a combination of schools and parenting to blame for their lack of basic life skills.

Well I've had a different experience of this. We recruit undergraduate interns and graduate employees into our firm, and I've been involved in CV selection and interviews for quite a few years.

The candidates that we are getting has improved remarkably since the financial crisis. Those in university have clearly realised they face intense competition for scarce jobs and seem to be doing everything possible to give themselves the best chance.

Now, that's at the high end of things, I will admit I have no idea what's happening in the council estates, but I don't think today's youth is particularly worse than that of 5 or 10 years ago. People are still people.

I used to teach English abroad, and always included a lesson on letter writing. I remember being taught formal letters when aged 11 at (local comp) school.

As part of my job I receive a lot of applications, and it is interesting to see the range of approaches. There are still graduates who know how to compose a formal letter of enquiry (on email), so some schools are obviously still teaching it.

I once got an email application that started "Hi!". At the other end of the scale are the excessively ornate letters specific to Indian applicants: "Dear Esteemed Sir, I most respectfully beg you to consider my humble application".
    They are an EYESORES!!!!
