Combi Boiler is it the pump or the fan that sounds like its running all the time?

Hi we have a 19 yr old combi boiler, a ferolli optima which has served us well so far. Our heating usually goes off around 10 pm and goes silent as you'd expect. My bedroom is directly over where the boiler is so I can always hear the low hum of it working.
Last night though I realised around 11 that the boiler hadn't gone off. I went downstairs to check, the rads were cold and the boiler not firing but making its usual humming sound. Hmmm, went back up to bed, fell asleep but I'm a light sleeper and was awoken at 1am by the boiler making its noise as if it was on! Back downstairs and after 2 hours of trying to ignore it I gave up and switched it off at the mains. Silence!!!
This morning then I've had to relight the pilot light and had to switch everything on to start so the fan started running and I realised the sound I can hear upstairs is the fan running inside (I think - or could be the pump - not sure where the pump is though??)
Now this sounds silly I know as we've had the boiler years but should this fan run all the time? Maybe it's suddenly become noisier so I'm hearing it upstairs? I always thoughts the boiler was silent when not actually heating water...
Also, not sure if its connected but our electric tripped about 6 times the night before last and it was always the ring in the kitchen that was tripping, where the boiler is plugged in. Could that have anything to do with it? We started eliminating small kitchen appliances but it never tripped again after that so we really don't know what caused the tripping, any ideas or help please?

Constant trickle fan because the pilot light is always on. Had something similar with my ferroli, the fan can get noisy at times. Also likely that if this fan is starting to seize or has a fault it may well be the cause of the tripping.
Change the fan imho. But I'm sure there are plenty of GSR's to tell you that you need a new boiler

If the boiler has a pilot light, then it needs a fan on constantly to stop the boiler filling with burnt gases. The fan should just be running at a low speed when the boiler's not actually running. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Thanks both, it does indeed seem like a noisy fan is to blame. Engineer calling on Saturday so it'll be interesting to see if he says its that's the problem!0
