Apologies if this has already been mentioned - a couple of years ago, my mum downsized from a two bed house to a 1 bed flat after my step-dad passed away.

She got a budgeting loan to help with removal costs, as there was no help from her HA at the time (this was before the "bedroom tax" came in).

    I forgot.

This may be a little pedantic. It's probably still worth saying. Some things can't be moved by one person. Some things are difficult to pack. Good man-and-van companies do offer all the relevant options. A man and a van may not.

Many (most) man and van companies offer two men for a house move.I used one when I last moved, few trips,a lot of possessions, furniture and appliances to move and at £25 an hour..

It's worth looking.I paid a daft amount when I used a removal company years back

    Part of the Furniture
I'm a man with a van amongst other caps I wear and I would always expect to be doing the lifting either on my own or with my own help, all the lads that I know do the same thing.

OP, would the incentive to move still be available even though you are already moving?

Some people may need a temoval van.

God forbid we should help someone affected by the "bedroom tax" who a) copes without complaining and b) helps another family in the process.

I wonder if she would be 'helping another family' if her benefits had not been reduced? Many people have been unable to see any need to move to a smaller property whilst their spare room/s have been funded by the taxpayer.

    I bet she has complained:)

but you really dont know what youre talking about. a man with a van will cos apptox £100. that is a whgole weeks income for many, and few could have it to hand.
you speak from a perspective of someone that has a suffivient income. regardless of if you mean to belittle other people ... the outconme is the same

I thought that the OP might more easily be granted £100 for a man and van move than they would £1,000 for a professional housemove. If they aren't, than £100 is the sort of amount that someone on benefits "might" be able to raise from family and friends, whereas £1,000 might not.

OP if you have a look at anyvan.com you might find someone affordable. It's like ebay for couriers - post details of the job you need doing and they bid how much they'll do it for. It's anything from one off items to full house moves.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

It may well be, not. But the effect of her decision is that another family is helped.
    I bet she has complained:)

And I bet you're yet another jealous benefits-basher.
  • As a tenant of Flagship Housing myself under Waveney District Council in Lowestoft I can tell you them offer absolutely nothing in the way of help with moving costs. They do recommend a removal man who charges £25 though. However, that was about 4 years ago when my housing advisor at Flagship was much nicer and more helpful than the one they have now. Good luck if your going to attempt getting anything other than a rude remark from her.
