Bristol Airport drop off rip off

Yesterday I went to Bristol Airport to drop off relatives going to France - I have used this airport many times in the past. It seems that there is no option now but to pay £1 to access the drop off or pick up point. There is no other alternative in the airport grounds. All the roads have now got red double lines prohibiting any stopping.

When I tried to find a free drop off point I was moved on by the police.

What a rip off - it means that the airport receives £1 each time someone drops off and / or picks up from the airport. There is no free option!

Angry of Somerset.

No different than Prestwick Airport, but they dangle the carrot of '5 minutes free'. The trouble is you cannot make it to the drop off area in less than 2 minutes, the 300 seconds you have require meticulous planning - and remains a gamble.

If the roads are on private land, then the police can take a hike. Double any-colour lines are irrelevant in that case.

However, don't know if Bristol is still publicly owned, unlike many other airports, which (barring bylaws) are private roads and not subject to normal parking regulations.

I'm not sure this is correct. When you get to the barriers controlling the car park, there is a rather large sign with the terms and conditions which will take the driver some time to read.

I'm not sure what the driver could then do if the passengers, impatient with his/her prudence, hopped out of the car and legged it to the terminal with their baggage.

The driver, deciding not to accept the terms and conditions, then merely has to reverse back 20 yards to the roundabout and hey presto, no payment required.

    Don't think I haven't done it!

Most airports will charge for drop-off/pick-up, as it's easy money for them.

The airliners haggle landing fees downwards so the airport owners have to make up the shortfall somewhere, and parking is an easy target.
  • Bristol does (did?) have a free drop off carpark, but they hide it well. Last time I was there it allowed 10 minutes for free (and is still listed on the airport web site as "Drop off 2"). It is however not sign posted until you get to the entrance and is about 5 minutes walk from the terminal building.

Head for the Express drop off car park, but drive past the entrance and follow the road around to the right, it's a short distance down there on the right.

Norwich airport charges passengers £10 to go through into Departures. If you don't pay & get a ticket from the machine then you don't fly.

Trouble is, not enough people complain about this blatent rip-off, or boycott the airport altogether, to make them do something about it.

Are you sure about that? I asked about a private road and the police a while ago and was given different advice.
