Does a DSL Router include a Cable Modem ??
Comments
-
Are all DSL Cable Modems individually registered to each user & the network ??
peter999
Yes .It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
The modems supplied by Virgin have individual MAC addresses and are within a certain range so you can't connect any-old modem on and hope it works. It may be worth thinking about a cable modem anyway for future as stb connections can be a bit up and down.

I have the latest Samsung STB (swopped 2 months ago). You need Virgin to supply the cable modem.
You can have either the STB modem active or the cable modem active, it's one or the other, and it's VM who active one or the other.
What speed broadband are you on?
Through the STB you aren't going to get great speeds, as they aren't designed for the faster speeds that are now available and the broadband through the STB can slow down the TV side too on certain STBs.
Ask in the VM newsgroups for help if you have speed issues:
virginmedia.feedback if you are xNTL as at the moment xNTL don't have any support groups, but they may be able to help,
2x NTL Engineers have confirmed my area suffers from Congestion (but it's now not as bad as it was since Virgin introduced Traffic Management 4pm-midnight).
Then I speak to guy 2 doors up who says he's on Virgin/NTL Broadband & doesn't have any speed problem & uses separate modem (doesn't have TV).
I was on 4Mb service & speed/response in Evenings was terrible.
Now downgraded to 2Mb as no point paying for service you cannot receive.
So thought may be worth changing to separate DSL Cable Modem for Broadband, as it may help, as it isn't lumped in with cable TV processing electronics.
So I thought I might be able to test this myself, before getting Virgin/NTL to install DSL Cable Modem.
Sounds like I can't test this by getting any DSL Cable Modem as they're registered to specific user.
Do you think changing to separate DSL Cable Modem might help with Broadband speed ??

Possibly, possibly not.
It could be you are on a congested UBR, whereas the other person maybe on a less congested UBR.
The VM network is crying out now for upgrading, however VM aren't planning on spending enough money to upgrade the system, hence the throttling during peak hours if you download more than the small amount they allow you.
The area I was in (xTW) was congested, however that was upgraded before the cut backs.
Might be worth posting some stats in the VM newsgroup see if anyone can help, though they may just say as you are xNTL you'll need to phone in.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... During my numerous complaints to NTL (months ago), customer advisor suggested changing to separate DSL Cable Modem as he said it provides more stable Broadband !! (not sure why ??)The modems supplied by Virgin have individual MAC addresses and are within a certain range so you can't connect any-old modem on and hope it works. It may be worth thinking about a cable modem anyway for future as stb connections can be a bit up and down.

I didn't really believe him as he was just Customer Service, not Tech Support.
I spoke to NTL engineer who didn't agree & didn't confirm this would definitely help.
There doesn't seem a lot of logic to it as Set Top Box has inbuilt modem, but who knows.
What do you think or know ??

Haven't used cable as I live out in the sticks. Do you also have a phone service, and if so how does that connect, through the STB or a separate adapter?
Cable broadband works over the same co-ax cable the TV signal is sent, if you have a cable modem them the incoming co-ax is simply split into two, one goes to the TV, the other goes to the cable modem.
You can use the modem in the STB but it isn't capable of the faster speeds.
The cable phone line works similar to BT, though is mostly fibre optic apart from the box to the home. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

The cable STBs aren't that great, the modems in them aren't really now up to the job, some never up to the job to start with. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc...
