I'm looking for a DSL Cable Modem for my Virgin/NTL cable connection.

Does a DSL Router include a Cable Modem, or is it just for sharing the connnection to other Pcs ??

Looking at the router specs., I'm not sure.

No, you connect them to your cable modem using an Ethernet cable.

Didn't virgin supply the cable modem?

Cable routers normally plug between the cable modem and the PC to share the connection
    No, I have a Set-Top box.
I want to get a DSL Cable Modem & test my cable broadband without involving Virgin/NTL just yet.

The ADSL Routers generally seem to include a modem, thought that may be same for DSL Routers.

I guess people don't need to buy DSL Cable Modems, as their supplied by cable company.

Doubt if you can do any testing if they don't enable the dsl signal on your connection.

You don't need a modem as the STB has one built in.

As espresso said you connect via ethernet to the STB. Your PC should already be connected in that way so you just unplug your PC from the STB, connect that to the router and connect the router to your PC.

Other PCs can then connect via the LAN ports on the router or wirelessly, if it's a wireless router.

You will probably need to "reprovision" (re-register) your PC with the cable company (I did with NTL, some years ago) as it identifies the connected equipment and sees your new configuration as a new connection. When you first try and access the internet you will be redirected to the reprovisioning page and prompted to give the connection a unique name.

    I know all that.
I want to investigate a problem & know how to reprovision.

I need to get hold of DSL Cable Modem to takeover my Broadband.

To do any "testing" you would need to have an active connection for BB which you already have via your STB connection. For a cable modem to work it would need to be activated and registered on the Virgin network and that will only happen with a cable modem supplied by them and which you would be paying for.

Are all DSL Cable Modems individually registered to each user & the network ??

You need Virgin to supply the cable modem.

You can have either the STB modem active or the cable modem active, it's one or the other, and it's VM who active one or the other.

What speed broadband are you on?

Through the STB you aren't going to get great speeds, as they aren't designed for the faster speeds that are now available and the broadband through the STB can slow down the TV side too on certain STBs.

If you are on a 10Mbit service you can get them to send out a replacement modem that will work with that speed, though they will also swap over to a modem (has been for free for some time) if you no longer want to use the STB.

    Are you xNTL or xTelewest?

Ask in the VM newsgroups for help if you have speed issues:

virginmedia.feedback if you are xNTL as at the moment xNTL don't have any support groups, but they may be able to help, though it's xTelewest staff who work on these newsgroups and don't yet have access to the xNTL system, but sometimes can email the right people for details.

blueyonder.support.access.hi-speed if you are xTelewest as xTelewest have had great support via newsgroups for many years. They work until 22:00 each night.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
