  • Busy mom - thank you for taking your time to comment as someone who claims benefits I appreciate your input, it is interesting to hear the side of an adviser.

I think peoples concerns (mine anyway) with signing up to UJM is you can be sanction for not applying for a job that is totally unsuitable as it has just been sent to you without any discussion first. I appreciate that if you are handed a job to apply for in the JC that the same rules apply (it has always been this way) however at least in this instance you do have a chance to speak to the adviser to refuse the job explaining your reasons why and if there are valid reasons why the job is unsuitable then it can be removed?

I went to the Jobcentre last week as part of my training as a Job Club Coach. We were told that customers CAN tick an option to refuse a job, if they are not able physically or mentally able to do it or it is more than 90 minutes away by public transport. What they can't do is refuse it on the grounds of 'I don't fancy it' or 'I will have to get up too early'. Apparently there is a drop-down box with a list of reasons for refusing. If you have a genuine reason for refusing then you won't get sanctioned.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

now heres a weird thing, i just phoned them call centre again to enquire about this recent sanction and how it was reviewed and cleared, and the conversation got a around to this one that happaned nearly a year ago, and the guy said on the phone "he can see the sanction and he can see the dates being the same , and it looks like i was wrongly sanctioned, and to contact an advisor at my job centre to check on the appeal time frame"

so is he saying i can still try to get it reviewed and cleared?

Always get the jobsworths name in case you need to report them.

just a thought when a sanction is placed, i do have to be asked 1st for a "good reason" before its placed?

because im sure i wasnt sent any letters, as to asking why

and did i read somewhere that sanctions can not be applied before 5 days after the date of the "non compliance"
