Homemade Garlic Bread

Apologies if this has been asked before, I tried a search on the mega-index but couldn't find an answer.
I'm fed up of buying garlic bread and figured that it is probably cheaper and nicer to make my own.
As I live on my own, I would need to make it in small portions and wondered whether it would be cheaper to buy a french stick, cut it into 1-person sized portions, cut in the slits and spread with garlic butter, and then freeze without cooking it.
Presumably then, I could just cook straight from frozen the exact amount I needed for my meal?
Also, i've only made garlic butter once before and put waaaayyyy to much salt in it (to grind the garlic in the pestle and mortar) so does anyone have a foolproof recipe to hand.
Sorry if this is a daft question.
Cheers
Stilton
As a fellow singley (sp??) I make my own garlic bread fresh - and all I do is buy a french stick or a pizza base then mix some normal butter with crushed garlic (actually I use lazy garlic cos I dont waste as much:o ) wouldnt put salt in at all myself then spread it in and heat up. sorry its not a complex recipe sure someone will be along to do that but it works for me:D0 -
Thanks, I will give that a go.
Why is it the most simple things always seem the most complicated!!!!Debt free since May 20150 -
Hi stiltoncheese,
I make my own bread so I can't really advise on whether or not it would be cheaper with the french stick, but I imagine it would be....especially if you are going to freeze it in portion sizes so there won't be any waste.
To make the garlic butter I soften ordinary butter in the microwave.....just a few seconds or it will start to melt. Add in some crushed garlic cloves (one clove for two to three ounces of butter) and about a tablespoon of chopped parsley and mix well with a fork. If you're in a hurry garlic granules work well too.
Just slice the bread, spread on the garlic butter, wrap and freeze. I reheat mine from frozen but if the french stick is very brown on the outside it may be best to thaw it first to stop the outside from burning while the inside is still frozen.

Thanks.
I thought it would save time to freeze it because I could make a whole load up in one go without having to pop to the shops to buy the fresh bread everytime I wanted Garlic Bread (and face possible choccie/other naughty temptations).
I will give it a go when I order this months shopping.
Thanks again Pink and NelskiDebt free since May 20150 -
I buy French sticks after 7pm in Tescos when they often seem to be sold off cheap, then cut each one into about six pieces and freeze them. About 10 minutes in a warm oven thaws them and crisps them up nicely.
How about making up the garlic butter and then forming it into a roll and freezing it separately? You can cut pieces off the frozen roll; it will thaw quickly, and then you can spread it on the hot bread as required. That way you would also have garlic butter ready for making garlic mushrooms or adding to other vegetables (gorgeous on carrots) and also you would have un-garlicked bread available in your freezer for sandwiches if you needed it.0 -
That's a great suggestion, thanks!Debt free since May 20150
