If its working when the jack is jiggled about try carefully using a straightened paperclip to see if any fluff as become lodged in the socket.. Have had this happen before..

Poundland have air duster cans in as well, blast one of those into the socket (carefully). I find air dusters to be a pretty good cure all of late.

If possible, open the case and blast the air from the inside out.

This will stop any gunge being driven further into the socket/case from whence it may later emerge to cause the same problem.

Thanks for the heads-up. I need to strip open my laptop and give it a good clean - I was wondering where to get an air duster can. :)

I think the repair is potentially something that could be done yourself if you've the technical know how. I know when I had an issue with mine a few years back, Apple were quite unhelpful. I took a chance on a company called ukipodrepairs.co.uk, and haven't had any problems with mine since.

Was a headphone issue, with sound just coming through one earphone. Tested using a multitude of earphones as well to make sure I had the problem correct.

Just a quick update even though nothing has changed.

I had a free minute earlier so I placed a call to Apple. 20 minutes later and, even after talking to two members of staff about the issue, I'm in essentially the same position.

Apparently the warranty can only be applied if it's still within the first year of the original purchase. So, because I had my "original" iPod for five years it's now clearly out of date. Apparently in "his opinion" it doesn't matter that I'd paid for a replacement as we're outside that original warranty period.

So essentially, even though I pointed out that I'd basically paid £80 for a 90 day extension on my warranty it didn't matter.

All this poor customer service has just made me want to fight more to be honest. At one point he even tried to get me to admit that I had damaged it. ("So what was it you did that damaged the iPod?" repeatedly, even after I explained) so I quickly asked him for a complaints address as I was clearly getting nowhere with the issue, so it's up to snail mail now.

Thank you for all the replies I haven't responded to. I am reading them.

Any problems with the headphone jack can be circumvented using a Fiio E1 amp (with volume controls).

    I think I paid £8 for mine.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

The quickest and easiest thing to do is to email the Apple CEO, Tim Cook. His email address is easy enough to find via Google.

Be short, to the point and as emotionless as possible. You'll probably get someone higher up the chain ringing you with options.
