Out of curiosity, does anyone else mind the 'Is your meal OK' when you are half way through a meal?

As I wrote above, I spent a while working in a pub and having to ask diners this. I hated doing so, and I don't like it when I have restaurant staff do it to me. However, there is a point to it - a lot of people will only complain mid meal if they are given the chance to, and mid meal is when the problem is rectifiable. Otherwise people only mention a problem at the end of a meal and may be bad publicity for the establishment.

    It depends how it's done.

If they pick a lull in the conversation and quickly ask: "everything OK?", that's fine and they get a smile and a "Yes, thanks".

If, on the other hand, they interrupt, or stand there waiting so you have to break off conversation it can be annoying. They still get a polite response but usually one that is less overtly friendly.

How do they always manage to ask when I've just taken a bite and can't answer because my mouth is full? Every single time!

Not good and it does annoy, BUT this is the training the staff have to follow, otherwise they are out of a job. Been there, hated approaching people but jobs are hard to come by and you do as you are told. If it annoys get in touch with managers and tell them. They wo't do anything though, they have their orders to. Why O why do people always pick on shop staff. :mad:They do a Job for a very low wage, get loads of abuse from customers, a lot who have never worked in their lives, and are trying to keep their jobs, and earn a living for their families. Give them a break folks.

Most pub chains operate a policy of asking with in the first 5 minutes of being served.

Totally agree with this. I used to work in retail and we had the bosses on our backs ALL the time to continually ask customers if they needed any help, were ok etc. You could say to the boss that you'd just asked them and they'd tell you to ask again :( You couldn't win :(

I hate it myself when Sales Advisors come up to you all the time when all you want is to be left alone and you'll ask for help when you need it, it IS very irritating I agree, and I hated doing it myself.

But, on the other hand, you just can't win sometimes and have customers storming out of the shop because apparently they haven't been asked if they needed any help....probably the same ones that would complain if you did ask them!

Honestly, we had some customers who had right proper attitudes, I would honestly think twice before working in retail again.

Good to know that at least you had some with the proper attitude.

As a 17 year old working part time as a sales advisor in Comet I earned a great wage. It was a challenging job in some ways though.

We were pressured to approach people but I found as long as you were friendly and did it in the right way people were generally good natured.

I think my problem is that I don't really believe they want to help me, I think they just want to sell me something and I'm pretty comfortable in making my own mind up as to whether I shall purchase it or not.
