  • Irrespective of what is stated on the Askmid website:
    I may be committing an offence of unlawfully obtaining data contrary to section 55 of the Data protection Act 1998

    you are not breeching the DPA by using the site to simply find out if a vehicle is insured.

    Whether or not a vehicle is insured is not covered by S55 as this part of the act relates to "Personal data", and this is data from which a living person can be identified. Simply being told if there is valid insurance in place does not help to identify someone.

    You may well be breeching the DPA if you use the £4 Askmid option without good cause as this will reveal details of the policyholder, but the free option doesn't divulge any personal data at all.
