I am now concentrating my search upon the north of the city Arnold, Hucknall, Bulwell, kirkby/sutton in ashfield areas seem a lot cheaper and the crime rate according to Zoopla is less... Looking at renting for a couple of months then buying. Just have to compomise and be prepared to commute a few miles (possibly car) if I have to.0

People write some rubbish about Nottingham in regard to crime and guns and for some reason that "reputation" sticks.
I moved to Nottingham from Birmingham 25 years ago and have absolutley loved it and felt far safer than I ever did in Brum. Every City has its problems. A Panorama programme some 7-8 years ago and one or two some drug gang-related shootings seems to pervade the perception of outsiders that everyone in Nottingham is a gun tooting criminal !! The issues are no different to other big cities and indeed I have found Nottingham to be a safer, friendlier and nicer city than many other places I have been to. There are lots of positives - many and varied places to eat and drink, arts and culture / music, shopping etc. and the city centre itself (for a medium-large city) is very walkable.
Sure there are some places I would not recommend and I think your budget is going to be a major issue on restricting your choices but 1981trouble's and Sternmusik's pointers on neighbourhoods is pretty accurate. By the way I have lived in the Toton / Chilwell area for the past 11 years (6 miles west of city centre) which is a very safe and friendly neighbourhood and will be getting a new tramline soon (it is under construction) but £70k won't get you much if anything there. I lived in an area about 20 minutes walk into town for 12 or so years and loved that too.
If you have to buy a property I think a flat is going to be more likely an option than a house for £70k.
You are best spending a day or two in the city making viewing appointments and getting a feel for a few of the neighbourhoods to help you decide where to focus your efforts.
Good luck with the move. I felt "at home" in Nottingham within 1 week of arriving and have loved being here ever since.0 -

Also reassuring that you 'felt at home' within the first week of moving to Nottingham. Always have had a soft spot for Nottingham, used to live 40 miles down the road from Nottingham many years ago.0 -
Another vote for Hucknall here, affordable, tram into town, near the M1 and easy access to north notts/derbyshire countryside. Loads of new builds if you like them. Lived here over 10 years and no contact with crime at all.
Bulwell is a bit dodgy though! Also, any further out towards Mansfield (Kirkby, SinA etc) would be less convienient, having to use the bus (the tram is quicker at peak times) or drive to the tram stop. Better to be able to walk to the tram.0 -

I can only presume that the trade off for a cheaper house is a rougher area generally, so I take on board your comments and will leave the option of a flat open, still could do with 2 bedrooms mind. You say 1981trouble's and Sternmusik's comments are accurate so are you saying that Hucknall, Arnold, Bulwell, Kirkby and Sutton in Ashfield are decent areas?. I will eventually be able to travel up to Nottingham within the next month when commitments ease, but I don't want to waste time flogging dead horses.:)

Hucknall, Kirkby and Sutton in Ashfield (especially the latter 2) are a bit far out from Nottingham and I don't really know them well enough to comment.
Parts of Arnold are good. Bulwell less so I would say.
If you want to live very centrally the Lace Market area has lots of flats (many are gorgeous converted former textile factories) but won't be cheap. Mapperley and Mapperley Park and Wollaton are good areas within the City. I like Beeston a lot (got its own town centre which is being revamped, 3 miles from city centre and near the Uni campus / Tennis Centre / Science Park and new tram lines) and think you'd get more for your money in a place like Beeston. Quite a mix of students and locals but has a feel of being in the suburbs yet close to the city centre.
Hope it all works out for you whatever you do. As I say I spent more than half my life here now and found so much to do on the social / cultural front aswell as quiet nights in!!
By the way Derby isn't bad at all (there is a bit of a Nottingham / Derby rivalry thing so there is a tendency to belittle each other depending on where you come from) but I commuted to Derby for 3 years when I was working there and found it to be fine. Smaller city than Nottingham but some decent places to go out, a clean city centre, some nice people and never felt unsafe there either!0 -
So whats Nottingham/Hucknall/Ashfield area like for jobs... I'm in customer service/retail/IT(entrant level) ?0

Did you ever make it to Nottingham? I am looking to move there soon and work in the same industry.0
