I have just lived for six years nr Nottingham in one of the most beautiful villages there is...0

I find the comments about Nottingham a little bit harsh. I lived there for six years and was never a victim of crime. Not even my bicycle got stolen. Some areas are definitely best avoided (St Anns, Meadows, parts of Sneinton, Bestwood estate, parts of Hyson Green). The city centre at night is full of students, hen/stag parties and generally drunk people. Most cars have a steering wheel lock fitted.
Yes, the crime rate is higher than average but there are some lovely (and expensive) areas as well (e.g. West Bridgford). Culturally there is quite a lot going on in Nottingham. Where I live now (south west England), the crime rate is much lower, and the place is gentile and lovely, but but try going to a contemporary art gallery/jazz concert/threatre/arthouse cinema and you'll probably draw a blank.
I like Beeston (used to live there for a few years), traffic links to the city centre are good, and there are some lovely residential roads but I doubt you'll get a house for 70k. I disagree with the previous poster in that I have always found Derby very dull, like a smaller and more boring version of Nottingham.0 -
Areas to treat with extreme caution:
St Anns, Meadows, Hyson Green, Lenton
Areas to look at carefully:
Sneinton Beeston Clifton Mapperly Sherwood Radford
Areas I'd say were fine and affordable:
Carlton, Hucknall, Arnold, Aspley, Nuthall, Long Eaton, Chilwell
Towns further out to the north would comfortably hit the budget.
Every city has crime, I don't find Nottingham any worse or better it just has a reputation that it is. If you are sensible then no real issues.0 -

I lived in Hucknall for 4 years, and my husband worked in Arnold - never had any problems in either. Hucknall's big advantage is that it's on the main tramline into the centre, which is a big consideration if you're not going to be running a car.
It does seem like a lot of posters on this thread are running the city down, but if it wasn't for family who need us where we're now living I'd move back there without hesitation. It's a vibrant, well-situated city, and though like any others there are areas to avoid, (certainly St. Ann's and Hyson Green!) on the whole I found it a fantastic place to live.
If you're not comfortable living in the city itself budget wise, certainly look at Mansfield, Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield. The local trains are well linked to Nottingham, and the roads are easy enough if you're proficient on a bike.Team Pink! Baby girl due 25/5/140 -

However I appreciate and take on board other peoples views, but do feel there is a lot of awfulising going on... Am I right?... or just sheer delusional?:undecided
I lived in the city 99-03 and then in the towns to the north (thank you for my small mortgage!!) 03-08 and recently moved back, I also worked in some of the roughest areas with inner city kids so most of the above is from experience.
My actual experiences - St Ann's as a fresher out of a small town - OMFG, baptism of fire.
Sneinton, also as a student, had house broken into by next door drug dealer but the actual area was fine and I felt safe walking around on my own at night. although I get the impression this has deteriorated since.
Hyson Green - again house broken into, hated the area, but 2 streets over from us was fantastic, great social and pubs etc, just a dodgy street we were on.
Lenton - student house, no probs but never felt particularly safe, then estate house as a working person which was a fab place to be but this has changed a lot since as most of this estate is now students rather than families.
Radford, worked in for years, great local community but looks very run down and if you aren't part of the crowd then quite scary.
Sherwood, Beeston etc are places where young professionals move to having left uni but still think they are young.
Carlton,Arnold, Hucknall, Sutton, Mansfield, Kirkby, Aspley etc I would say are more grown up areas where people move into to settle for life/have families.
Hucknall, sutton, kirkby, mansfield all are on a good reliable train line into the city, hucknall also on the tram (check new routes as this is being expanded out towards beeston/long eaton so will affect housing that way).
I guess it is a city you either love or hate and that determines your opinion of it and the reputation of it.0
