Grrrr! Cat rescues!

Why not check out the small ads or local newsagents? I still see cards with 'Free to a good home' for moggy kittens in my local Supermarket and Newsagents. you would still be 'rescue-ing' a cat, just not through a charity.0

I was tempted to buy through gumtree when I was looking for a cat, but with a charity you know you can get a healthy cat, or at least know what the issues are. If you can afford a hefty vet bill, and are happy to take the risk, that's fine.
If not and the cat turns out to be ill, what do you do? Get him pts because you can't afford treatment, of put him through the trauma of being rehomed?
Some people are even happy to pay to get a healthy cat, but living being should not be treated like commodities, and it encourages people to breed cats just to make money, and some will not care about the cat's welfare (unless someone is prepared to pay a lot of money and use a good breeder...).0

I went through all sorts of fun trying to find our 2 kitties! Local charity was undergoing renovations, so no cats in. Local CP had no cats who could be homed with other cats (and we really wanted 2 so they would have a playmate, plus all neighbours had cats). Other shelters said we were too far away to home to.
Thankfully, was put onto a shelter 3/4hr drive away who were brilliant. Friend spotted them on Facebook as not being fussy about distance homed. Specialist cat centre, lovely, genuine people who were full of cat-related stories. Made us an appointment and took us through all of the cats in their care (offered us kittens too, but we wanted older cats who needed less intensive care as we both work full time). After a long time playing with them all, decided on a brother and sister who wanted to be re-homed together, had a chat about cat-care and our plans, showed them pictures of our house, and had our vets do our home check.
And now 2 adorable kitties staring at me!
I guess moral of the story is don't give up! (and New Start in Newent are awesome ) 0 ) 0

I adopted my wussy !!!!! from Bleakholt in Ramsbottom, had a home visit, very down to earth woman, did not have a holier that thou complex. Had to re-name mogs, couldn't be doing with a George, late father in laws name, so started calling him Coppa as soon as we got him in the car. He was 14 months old and its almost 2 yrs to the day we got him. Some of our local animal charities do a senior kittizen thing where if you give a forever home to 1 you can get assistant with all age related illness.
Ive seen pets advertised on my local freecycle many a time. And it always made me a bit sad to be honest.0

There are some forums with specific sections about rescue cats, try pet forum, cat chat and purr in their hearts, there are a lot of people there who can give good advice.
However be prepared to get some stick, because some people on those forum get upset when they see owners moving on and not taking responsibility for their pets, particularly older one that are very difficult to rehome.
If she has to give them to an animal shelter she may want to choose one that doesn't put to sleep healthy animals just because they can't be rehomed (e.g. stay away from the RSPCA)
PS if you state where your daughter leaves there may be someone local who can help 0 0

I understand the backlash we may get from this and am already a long standing member of purrs and catchat. The house she is in is being sold so no option to stay and as she is limited on what she can afford and where she can go sadly she is unable to find anywhere that is cat friendly.:(
We already have 5 cats so cant help her
She is located in Biggin Hill area of Kent and is getting in touch with her local rescues today, She was hoping to re home directly so as to minimise any trauma to the cats0

Imagine if YOUR cat was a house cat, or only used to a very rural setting . Out of interest , how many people would rehome their cat to a home alongside a busy main road and not leave their friend there with a heavy heart ? Be honest now.
No saying - well yes I would,
except not THIS one as she has no road sense;)
Shelters have in most cases no idea what environment their cats are used to before being taken in .Could be timid house cats streetwise moggies, or countryside cats. They rescue, comfort, nurse, often hand feed, build confidence, and care deeply for them , sometimes for many months or years. Im not surprised they turn down homes beside major roads , especially when previous pets have died on them.
That was a serious question , I really am curious to know how many of us would home their own much loved cat to alongside a main road providing the new (unknown to you) owners were nice, seemed kind and promised only to let the cat out the back door?0

I am trying to work out when it would be kind to adopt a cat. How long would you experts advise I leave between adopting and going away for the weekend or longer? But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.
