Grrrr! Cat rescues!

So back story- I have two gorgeous cats, one 5 year old ginger male, one older calico lady. I figured we probably have room in our life for another. We live in a large 3 bed detached house, with very large front and rear gardens and plenty of animals for them to worry. Out of the cat flap is the garden of the local church as well.

I have phoned two rescues now who won't rehome with us as our address is on a main road? Hello? We are about 100m back from that main road so probably a lot safer than most other houses. We are in fact round the back of the church- it is the old ministers house. I asked them to look at Google Earth as you can see our location but nothing.

Grrrr! You would think that I would be a perfect candidate for a cat! Sorry rant over. Does anyone know anywhere that is a bit more sensible in the Leicester area?

    Plenty if animals to worry?!
  • Ask around, you might well find that someone has a stray hanging around that needs a good home.
The worst I ever heard was a friend who was a vet, they had an abandoned kitten brought in who was quite ill. She took it home and nursed it back to health and then decided that it needed a friend for company so went to the local you know where. They said that they only homed kittens in pairs, she explained she already had one and surely they had an odd one - no go she was told. She then said that that was fine and she'd take a pair, she was refused as then she'd have three and that was too many :rotfl:She got another from a local farm in the end.
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D

The CPL have given me some numbers. Found a lovely very small local charity that does not have a central location. All kitties in foster homes. Going to see a little girl tomorrow who was a stray until recently.

I will never go to you-know-who after the things I read on here! Used to volunteer for them as well. I understand you have to be strict, but really? I already have 2!

    Sorry for the rant!

Kittens in pairs? Is she mad? Most people want kittens so surely you should ration them :D. I don't mind how old kitty is.

The kittens in pairs always 'niggles' me a little! Partly its 'company' for them and to have a play mate but its also so they can rehome two at a time. Rehoming centers are full of kittens, there is no need to ration them thats for sure.

They dont seem to think about the cats maturing and hating the sight of their 'playmate' as most cats dont like company anyway and only tolerate a multi cat household!

Two is my limit and had we known how the eldest would have been with another adult cat (and i didnt know said cat) we would never of got Charlie in the first place as Ollie really does just like being on his own.
But its a bit tough now and i couldnt part with either of them so they just have to get on with it .. how selfish am I :D :rotfl:

I'm having problems too, you see al these cats looking for homes and then you don't seem to be able to get to them.
And it's not about individual circumstances, we tick all the boxes (safe garden, I work from home, no children/pets, experienced, own the flat, no easy access to main roads) and we are looking for 2 cats (hard to rehome cats, black, limb/eye missing, shy, are fine by us).

We have contacted 4 charities (well 3 charities but 4 locations).
First one we called and emailed, but after talking to a lady who seemed very busy, we never heard back.
Second one made a huge fuss about having a cat flap, but with a huge french window it could cost a lot of money which we can't afford.
Third one, we were approved, but they were never really too bothered about us adopting or not, nobody ever contacted us or spoke to us about rehoming, we found two cats on their website and met the foster mum at an event (sadly they ended up going to cat-heaven instead of coming with us :( ).

The 4th one is another branch of one of the above charities, but with a very big rescue centre, it's a long journey but at least we know for certain that they have several suitable cats.

It's heartbreaking to think of all the cats on these charities' websites, desperate for homes, and all the obstacles they put in your way.

I completely agree Springer211 it seems to hard doesn't it? But I thought they would be happy to find a new home. The CPL lady was very nice, I described everything about us and kitties, but she didn't have any suitable. I don't mind hard to home either; my plan as a soppy so-and-so was to just find out which cat had been there longest and go for them, but it doesn't work like that does it?

I have 6. Never set out to have 6 but took one in when I was working in a homeless project, boy couldnt take his cat into the one he was staying in. Then got two brother cats from the SPCA, another from the SPCA. My ginger tom was a stray, found him when I was at work and yes I did wait a while before taking him and make efforts to find out if he was someone elses cat, he was living on the streets, was being fed by a few people and my last two I got from a poster in the vets surgery, my mums cat had FIV and she saw a poster, the boy couldnt take his pets into a new home, a long haired girl and another ginger tom. Had the first cat I got for 10 years till he died 6 years ago.

You'll find the cat you are looking for one way or another. My mum has 5 and yes they can be a worry but so many animals need a home.

Our next door neighbour has been refused at all the local rescues recently, they want to get an adult or elderly cat and we live on a main road. We take precautions with our two: keep them shut in at night (traffic is pretty slow during the day) and don't ever let them out the front door. They were planning on trying Gumtree instead, although that was a while ago and no new cat has appeared so maybe they've given up on the idea. Shame, as there is someone at home all day, a lovely garden, would make a really nice home for a cat especially if the rescue spent some time matching them up well (I'm imagining an elderly cat who just wants to potter about and likes human company). I guess if they go to Gumtree still an unwanted cat will get a new home.

Ours are from a non-local rescue (Battersea) so they didn't bother homechecking us. I don't know if they would have refused us if we'd been closer; but really, serving London with all its traffic I presume they don't refuse homes based on proximity to busy roads!!!
