Block of flats- night time noise help needed

  • Thanks again for the replies.

I went downstairs and spoke to him yesterday- for the past few nights I've been getting ready for bed before 11, and then sitting down and carrying on as normal. One of the things said last week was that it was not normal to spend 20 minutes getting ready for bed because he only took 5! So I'm doing my 20 minute routine of getting changed, taking meds, applying body cream (I have several medical conditions) doing my teeth, turning on my bedside lamp, moving a glass of water into the bedroom etc before 11 (which causes the floor to creak). And then when I do go to bed I simply have to walk from the sofa, to the bathroom, and then to bed- instead of lots several lots of walking to and fro. He has said that this has helped as the noise doesn't go on as long. So I shall carry on doing this to be nice to him whilst he's having a hard time.

I did explain that I would still need to walk to the bathroom in the night if I needed to use the loo, but that this couldn't be helped! I have given him my landlord/agent's address for him to write to to complain (they won't do anything unless he does). If he wants to do this and then they don't do anything the person I spoke to at the council said he could get a warden to investigate whether the floor was too noisy, and if so mediate with our landlords. I shall ask my landlord about screws at my next inspection which shall be soon- the problem is that my flat and me and have not changed in the 2 1/2 years I've been here, but he's only had a problem the past few months, so they are reluctant to take up the laminate (flat is a mixture of carpet, lino and laminate- but it's noisy all over, and laminate is hardest to take up) if it's just him being sensitive at the moment and it could go back to how it was for 2 years...

Sounds like you need a building acoustic check.

We have a tenant who is ALWAYS complaining about noise from the flat below and have had a building acoustic check done which shows there is a problem. The flats were only built in 2005.

Definitely worth pushing for this, just for your own sanity.

    I think you are a saint !

Telling you how long you should take with getting ready for bed is absurd and him taking less time is a gender and a personal hygiene matter ....he,s a bloke and grubby.

I'd have told him to take a hike and if he wants to complain go ahead but he stops the harassment right now.

  • Just went to the bathroom, didn't flush, tiptoed, and he has banged again!
My heart is racing, I feel sick and want to cry!
Very tempted to get in my car and drive away

On the plus side my landlord thinks he is unreasonable and that he can't dictate what I do. She is coming to inspect the flat in the next 2 weeks, but nothing has changed about the floor itself to make him complain the past few months.
I'm keeping a log of it, just want him to stop!

You've been more accommodating than anyone else on here would have been. Myself included. You don't have to put up with any of this.

Let him bang all he likes. You're not doing anything wrong. It's you who should be making a complaint, not him.

Go to bed when you want. Wake up when you want. Use the bathroom when you want! Don't live your life around someone else's misery.

Sorry, just had to comment that I think this is now getting ridiculous. If your neighbour wants to live in a super silent environment he needs to move somewhere else.

Whilst I understand the need to be considerate when living in flats you have to make normal living noise

He's lucky I don't live there as I go to bed around 11:30, get up most morning at between 5:00 and 6:00 and have two airly young children!

Have you spoken to your local police to see if they can have a quiet word and explain that his behaviour is not acceptable.

I would be tempted to be a bit noisier - if he is like this already, hopefully that would persuade him to move on! If it is a rental, he should have no problem finding somewhere that suits his sensitive little ears.

I agree OP. You've tried to be nice but this is ridiculous. Call the police, explain how he keeps banging in the middle of the night (harassment) and ask them to have a word with him.

But the OP is already up .... the neighbour was woken.

Nobody's right. The building is at fault.

    Both are frustrated.

The building may be at fault, but the below neighbour is the one with the problem (which apparently has only bothered him recently).

The OP (if what is being said is the case) is an absolute saint - they're doing nothing whatsoever wrong, have been more than considerate, and have every right to move about in their flat as they wish.

The neighbour downstairs needs to take the issue up with the powers that be, not the neighbour upstairs who's doing nowt wrong.

STILL doesn't give him the right to bang on her ceiling at 445am. going to the toilet at that time in normal, but that isn't!

He is harassing her. She should call the police.
