Salt all the way, use 2-3 tea spoons in water and simmer. The crusty bits will start to lift after about 10 mins or so.Know the difference between what you WANT and what you NEED. :T0

Thanks everyone! I knew you'd know!
Going to try the salt, then cola if salt doesn't work.

Help! I've made plum jam (first time making jam) and it took ages for it to set, and not kept my eye on it, and realised bottom of the pan, it had burnt a bit. Once, I poured it into my sterilised jars, I thought naively, to fill the pan with cold water (yes, I know, very stupid of me!:(). It went hard of course, and now I can't get the hardened jam off. Is there a way to salvage my £20 stockpot, or am I due to get my pennies out and buy another one??:(
I've had a mad 2 weeks, making my batches of different preserves for the first-time ever, and since making my jam, I am totally gutted that I've ruined the only biggest pan I have for this kinda job.
Anyone to help pls??? thanks!;)0 -
Fill the pot half full with water, bring to a gentle simmer and keep stirring till the jam dissolves?Val.0

If the post above doens't do the trick, try biological washing powder and warm water
More suggestions in this thread; I'll merge this later to keep ideas together.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
The trick, I've found, is to keep stirring the deposits as the water gets hot, and it should come off ok. Works for chutney too (but wouldn't want anyone to think burning preserves is a habit of mine):o0

Hiya, I did exactly the same thing last year. I got the burnt-on jam off by putting a concoction of vinegar, lemon juice, water, washing up liquid, bicarbonate of soda (and possibly anything else I could think of) into the pan and boiling it up, topping up the water when necessary. Mostly, the black bits floated to the top and the rest came off with a scrape from a spoon. Super!0

Boil coca cola in the pan for 5 minutes. Works for me.
I agree its worked for me in the past.Just get some basics cola from sainsburies or similar (20p ish) and it will work a charm.
Might need to do it a couple of times depending on how bad the pan is as the coke essentially gets too dirty (bit like trying to wash dishes in dirty water)2013 Free Money - £363.44 Topcashback

Oh, at last, I can now report back to let you know that my OH had done the job the other night, and I was so astonished as he didn't follow the tips from above like I had told him, and he said he just soaked it in hot for the night, and then just scraped it using all his might from a bit of elbow grease, he said, and the burnt solid jam came away eventually... I really did think, I was gonna have to buy an expensive replacement, but thankfully OH saved it!! thanks for all your replies ppl.
nb. I did try to search for a similar thread but obviously i didn't put 'burnt jam' in, I stated 'hardened jam'!
thanks for merging this!0
