Cetirizine tends to work, but makes me very, very drowsy even though it's marketed as a 'non drowsy' antihistamine. Many others don't work at all. Still searching for a non drowsy antihistamine that works before even considering any kind of bulk buying. Heard that Fexofenadine works well and waiting for my doctor to disperse a prescription for this. If it works and doesn't make me feel like a zombie, I'll take the good advice here and buy cheaply next time. Great post.
  • In my lifetime of coping with hayfever/dustmite/cat & feather type allergies (I'm 55) I have found the quickest and most effective way of dealing with an outbreak is to take Piriton, or more often its cheap generic pharmacy equivalent, Chlorphenamine.

The slow release non-drowsy tabs like clarityn/cetrizine are fine for preventing low level allergic reaction, but if its a really bad pollen day when my eyes start swelling, throat irritates and chest wheezes, then its Piriton all the way, which seems to go against what Moneysavingexperts tablet run-down is saying. To counteract minor drowsiness I just have a coffee or a glass of coke.

Who else gets a better result with the drowsy rather than the nondrowsy drugs?

I've been advised to try Avamys ( Fluticasone furoate) or Nasonex ( Mometasone furoate) Has anyone seen any reduced deals on these?.
  • I run a small independent pharmacy in York. We are able to match these prices easily.
You should always check with local businesses first before running off to use mail order.
If you don't support small shops, all that will be left will be the supermarkets and mail order companies - then we will all be worse off.

The national chains can also price match but choose not to.

These are both prescription only medicines - so free of charge if you are exempt, or £8.05 per prescription.

Although I am the company director for an online pharmacy, I am still a registered pharmacist. I still would recommend visiting an independent pharmacy on the high street if customers are unsure they have hayfever . Ask if they will price match our prices and ensure you have a full consultation to diagnose symptoms.
