So I contact the ASDA customer service on phone after I return from my 2 week vacation and the guy on the phone say first said that if the machine didn't show any money then nothing can be done but when I questioned him again about cash being 5 pounds short, he said he would talk to the store manager who would give me a call in the next 10 mins. As turned out, he didn't call in the next 10 mins but did call in about 3 hrs.. this was a new guy and the earlier one was no more with ASDA...so he started off with his customary "sorry for the inconvenince...." stuff. When I was thinking that I am not gonna get anything out of it, he mentions that I can come next day and collect the 20 pounds from the store!!
So I go the next day and encounter the same woman at the customer service with whom the whole issue started at the self service machine. Told him about what the store manager said to me and she takes out a 20 pound note from the counter and hands it to me!
Was relieved to get back what was deservedly mine after a month. Don't know what prompted them to agree to give it back...either it was because of the new manager or if they found the 20 pound note...but the bottom line is ...perseverance pays!Don't trust a forum for advice. I've had this issue twice with these machines, so you have to question how accurate they are. The money doesn't get put in with the other money straight away -- it's in some intermediate part of the machine. The coins revolve continuously on some kind of conveyor belt inside. Both times have required the assistant opening it up and pulling out stuck coins -- unfortunately (stupidly) they can only do this when the security guard with keys is about.0

Have to say I put £15 into self-service machine at my local tesco store this week. The machine registered only £5. The assistant tried for about one minute to solve it, called supervisor who arrived within 30 seconds and unlocked machine. Money was in an intermediate chamber and there was no further delay. Had similar problem in same Tesco store 12 months ago when machine failed to register a £1 coin and again the supervisor found the problem and my coin immediately. Luck maybe but the supervisor is on hand in that store with a key, no disputes.0

This is the correct response. If they resist, the phrase "I'll wait" works wonders.0 -
Your receipt will show the amount of cash tendered.
Does it show £20 or £40?
However, having said that, I believe the machine would've/should've stopped accepting money after the first note as this was more than the amount due.0 -
Unless you can PROVE you put in two £20 then you have no chance in getting anything from ASDA and attacking a long standing member of this fourm is hardly going to help you get any help is it0

To know which notes you put in the machine you would have to have looked at them prior to putting them in. How could you then inadvertently put them into the machine when you already knew it was too much?0

I can see why Asda felt the need to evict you from the store if your attitude on here is anything to go by.
Why did you attempt to put more money in when the receipt was printing? It does sound fishy..0 -
The best advice would be to ensure you take more care when inserting notes into the machine.
People do "try it on" over £20 in the hope that a store will think it more trouble than it is worth to stand their ground and just cough up the cash.0 -
Hang on. These machines don't allow you to put as much excess money in as you like. As soon as it has enough or more the screen changes and the change is given. I've never known a machine that allows you to keep putting money in as if you have to tell it when you're done before it gives change. As I said they don't do this, if you spend £11 one £20 would have resulted in change being given straight away.0
