Same as you I think no issue with that but houses are infrequent around here for the size i would need. Thats why staying with my folks is an option but however the boys school is not near them they live 11 miles away from us

So why not take the advice I posted earlier and stop paying your mortgage and debts and look for a rental in your area.

Then I hate to say this Ox, but your boys move schools, simple as that I'm afraid. And please do not say they could not my two young kids had to come home from France homeless, older than yours and go to schools were one of them aged 12 knew no one at all, and he coped with it. Kids adapt better than adults and that is a FACT not fiction.

Okay so houses are infrequent, but if you are overcrowding your parents home then that helps, and believe you me you play all the tricks in the book, it is affecting your wives health, or it is affecting your oldest sons health and you get doctors to back you up. I may sound very cynical but you have to learn to also play the game.

Once you get over it all, you then get back on your feet, you are not going to be living on benefits forever, you are not going to be some lazy no good who sponges off the state, but right now you need to get out of the hole you are in. Sorry if I sound harsh I do not mean to, but I have been there Ox I was literally HOMELESS.

Because you can put what if? Scenarios in the benefit calculator and get some idea at what could be available to you if you rent, have mortgage etc.

Rylynn might help you understand what is available to you as well.

Tiger, let me ask you something Ox has some money, he has not gone bankrupt yet, OX you have not signed up to that DMP have you? or have you?

Could the money he has be used to pay 6 months rent in advance? he has £10K would that be fraud? or illegal?

There can be good and bad advice from any organisation. At various times I've seen some utterly shocking advice from CAB, National Debtline, PayPlan, CCCS and just about any other organisation you can think of.

Most of the time they get it right, but there are bad apples in every barrel and there don't seem to be enough of the good advisors to go around for any organisation.

Sometimes training seems to be lacking, while in other cases individuals have bias all their own.

I recall hearing of one advisor with a free organisation saying when challenged on them not recommending bankruptcy for an obvious case: "Well, people shouldn't be allowed to go bankrupt. You should pay your debts, even if it takes the rest of your life." I would stress that this person is no longer employed themselves after their line manager reviewed the recording.

This is why you should always get advice from multiple sources. Never depend on any one person or organisation.

I had a CAB volunteer lecture me on clearing my debts and telling me I should cut back (I had nothing left to cut back TBH)- luckily one of the staff took over as I was actually eligble for a Trust Deed which is what I was actually wanting help with.
The volunteer was a twisted old baggage who obviously did it to feel superior IMO.

Ox do not do anything yet, do not enter into anything.

The money you have can you not use that as a deposit and 6 months rent in advance on a rented house, not a flash one either. You are still employed right now. Hand back your keys and move out. Then go bankrupt. I may not be thinking straight and I am sure Tiger will be back along to help me out here.

You are not in arrears right now either are you?

Okay your credit rating now is good yes? which is why most people do as Tiger suggested, they save up to rent, stop paying the mortgage in some cases to do so. If you have this money you do not have to save up, you do not at present have a bad credit rating.

You rent a house, pay a year in advance if you like, you go BR which you say means you will lose your job, then you go on benefits, which you say are £500 per month, which you must be able to live on, if not I will come and show you how!!

You then re train, or get another type of job and you start afresh with no debts, no credit cards, no hassle.

Is this making any sense now to you?

If I had £10K and I knew I was not breaking any laws, or committing fraud, which I do not think you would be, but someone will soon tell me if you would be, then I would be looking for a rented house. I would hand back the keys to the one you are living in stating you can no longer pay the mortgage, move out, and then go BR, keeping aside out of the £10k enough to live on and pay for the double BR. You lose your job then you get JSA and whatever benefits until you can get another job.

What do you mean not great with £36K of debt, oh I see you mean your credit rating? but you are not in arrears are you. If you are paying a lump sum of a years rent I think you may find some agency will take you on Ox. And why not look for a private rental, local papers, shop windows you have to be proactive, not negative.

By the way where is this money, have you paid it into an account yet?

Do you know what I would never have thought you were an accountant, they are normally analytically focused.
