Well I only ask for stuff I need, admittedly there are times when I get more than one although that's rare, and tbh I haven't ordered any freebies for a while.

There are many freebies sites around the net that also have freebie links so its a little unfair to just target mse.

Its not always just greed there are some genuine people who want freebies to make there lives a little better.

Also the pigsback thread mentions that people are only clicking on to get the freebie points without actually shopping through the site.( better CS might improve that prblem -but that's an entirely different issue)

It is a different issue to that raised by the op. Pigsback is a promotional company who get paid by the companies on its site whether people 'shop' through their links or not.

There is no 'problem' with getting only the freebie points from Pigsback. People are free to sign up to the site without being obliged to make any purchases whatsoever and Pigsback and the companies advertising through them certainly aren't losing anything through these promotions.

It is essentially just a form of advertising and is a very effective way of getting your company's name and branding exposed to a wide audience. Everybody's a winner.

In terms of individual freebies, neither Martin nor anybody else can impose restraint on people. They are responsible for their own actions. Some people are just more selfish and greedy than others, unfortunately. :o
  • If we are talking greed and waste let's address the real culprits, the big companies who produce masses of waste through over-packaging, over production and promotion (leaflets that just go in the bin for example) Whilst I accept that people ordering things they may not use is not entirely without impact, all the energy of writing this thread might be better spent writing to the conglomerates to encourage them into more ecological and socially responsible behaviour. The relatively small number of people using this site is of minimal relevance by comparison. Greed is a sin that the "little guy" is often labelled with, I doubt many wealthy people are looking for a free packet of gum, but waste and greed, both nationally and globally, are more symptoms of wealth than of poverty. If you have some to spare you are more likely to have some to waste!

    Just a thought.......

Only 2 thoughts on this one for James:

    1) I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but if you felt that strongly perhaps you should have asked Martin Lewis Ltd to stop mailing out these freebie opportunities on the email newsletter? Please remember that the people who actually post here are but a very small fraction of those who read the columns, and of the million or so who get the email. I do have sympathy for the companies who get inudated because their link gets blasted around to all and sundry.

I don't feel that getting freebies in itself is at all wrong (otherwise what is James doing here himself?). What I am talking about is the unashamed greed displayed by SOME people, whether they are members or not.

Now this IS a big issue we could all begin to address and I thank this poster for raising it. I could see that we might make a real difference if we took back all our excess packaging to Mr Tesco. So thanks - but this IS a separate issue and deserves a thread (a board) all of its own.

Copy of IM sent to Martin today:

    Martin
I am begining to feel compelled to write about the greed and waste displayed on the chat forums, especially the freebies board.
Recently, for instance, an Arts Council travel wallet was snapped up in a flash by moneysavers and others, and those slower off the mark missed out. Yet today, as one small example, one "gkf" admits s/he sent for two that were not wanted or needed. At least they were offered back. I'll bet that this is one honest person among others who will just leave them unused in a drawer.
In another example, people were encouraged to send for free cards from a small company using the net as a low-cost publicity tool. Such activity could badly affect a company.
The first point is that freebie hunters should be selective: big companies do offers they cost out and are fair game, other smaller companies could be swamped. Secondly, they should be reasonable: don't grab six when you only need one: don't grab at all if you don't need it.
    What do you think?

    yawn...

somebody has too much time on their hands
