We too would love our own animals and my DH is already a butcher :\ so could manage it afterwards but I can't recall if you need your own liscence to DO IT at home, I think I'd send them to work with him and they can do it there. I agree PJ that if you eat it you should know where it comes from and so on. Easier said than done isn't it lol.

PWPS - sounds like you're getting quite a bit from survey sites - what do you use, are they worth it or do you have to spend all week for £1?

  • Hi Debtfre2012, I do a lot of surveys, easier in the school holidays as I'm off work otherwise I tend to sit and do them in the evening whilst watching TV, some sites i receive several a week others 1 a month, some I have to log into the site everyday and check as they don't always email you, Some you can redeem at a low amount £3/£4, some sites you need to have as much as £50 and I only tend to cash out of those yearly. I also do nectar adpoints use these in sainsburys and also ebay for extra cash.

I can PM you a list of the sites I use and if you want referring to any let me know.

  • Just realized that I have not done a proper update today.

Online banking has been done, no change as I've not been anywhere to spend anything in just less than a week.

I have also realized that I have not worn make-up in nearly a week, not been going anywhere so just been slapping moisturizer on and a bit of vasaline on lips, all money saving.

I have done a few surveys this morning whilst kids were still in bed, we are going out as soon as DH gets back from work as kiddies want to Ge0caching

All meals today have come from stores, cereal for brekkie, sandwiches and fruit for lunch and teatime I'm making HM burger, wedges, HM onion rings and HM coleslaw Nom nom nom:D.

It's pencilled in for a house move in about three years. Long-term I hope we'll have turkeys, too! :D (I just have no idea whether or not I'll be able to... I don't want to use the b-word.... "invite them for dinner" )
    .

Turkeys:eek:, don't think I could cope with them and I'm a big wuss and would get attached and certainly couldn't eat them, last year DH mentioned getting a couple of lambs to fatten for the freezer to which I said ok as long as I don't have to have much to do with them, but he was talking about getting a couple that had been rejected/mother died and for me to bottle feed them and rear them , it would have been a disaster I would have cuddled them, named them and probably sent DH to slaughter before the sheep :rotfl:.

I also know what you mean about the animals. I have this (possibly overconfident) view that I could manage birds I've raised, just about, but probably not mammals. I do think we should be able to kill if we have meat in our diets. It seems fairer to me, somehow.

But then again, there's meat, and there's meat you know. :(

If I do ever manage it with chickens, it will have to be on the condition of giving them a wonderful life and showing them the greatest respect.

Heard the mention of Turkeys and came rushing in :rotfl:

As you know we breed and rear turkeys - only on a small scale but I feel I might be nearly an expert.

I don't think you would have any problems eating them - they are so ugly, you can't even think of them as pets:rotfl:

One thing to remember is Turkeys just love to die, when they are poults (chicks) they will die even though 2 minutes before they were fine. It's not until they get past about 10 weeks do I feel confident they will be fine.

I have probably bored you all with my story in the past but I was vegetarian for 18yrs when DH decided to breed turkeys (we already had chickens) and we sold the meat etc. Eventually I decided that I would eat the meat we raise as I know where it has been from birth to death (my reason for being vegetarian was to do with animal cruelty) and so I now eat Turkey, Chicken and Lamb.

It can be hard with all the feeding, clearing out etc but it is so rewarding and as penny says I just love to go and watch them - they keep me entertained for hours.

If you want to sell your meat then you have to be licensed, they have changed the rules recently.

At the moment we rear only for ourselves and if close family or friends want a Turkey then we ask for a donation.

DH does all the killing, I help pluck once they are dead and then DH guts them and I help clean them up ready to be frozen - it's quite a family effort!! Even DD (11) will help - to start off with she did not eat Turkey for a few years as she had watched them killed but after a few years she realised that this is what happens to all meat and now eats any meat we put in front of her!!

To be honest I love the meat so much I don't want to sell it, I want my freezer stocked so I can have Turkey when I want!!
  • Hi EE, good to hear from you.

I take my hat off to you regarding your turkey's, I can imagine it is hard work.
  • Good morning and finally it is Pay day:j:j:j, I hate 5 week months at least august is a 4 week month.

Today is going to be a spendy day - grocery shopping, uniform shopping, fuel, animal feed and a couple of other bits, I will update later my spends.
