evactly. it will carry on until the last week of august when the academic year ends
as long as you receive cb you will be entitled to ctc

Wrong advice. I'm afraid CTC stops when the course ends but CB goes on until the end of august.

I think the rules might have changed?

When DD left 6th form 2 yrs ago, both her CB and CTC continued until end of Aug. They was informed she had left and was going on to Uni.
However DS left and started work on 17 June this yr, and both TC and CB stopped striaght away.
I dont know if it was different as he was working, or because DD was carrying on to Uni?

But none the less there has been a difference.
  • It was because she was going on to uni, Shelldean. It would've stopped immediately otherwise.

  • What if your child said they wanted to go to uni or stay on at college and then in September changed their mind? Would you have to pay back?

Well I've got my answer. Daughter finished college yesterday. Child Benefit goes on until the end of august but child tax credit stopped yesterday. Therefore only child benefit to feed her with until she either signs on or finds paid work (which ever comes first). Oh well!

She can claim JSA which will bring more money into the household than child benefit.

My brother is leaving sixth form in May he's 18.
He has decided he doesn't want to do anymore education and wants a full time job. He's never claimed any benefits and obv has a national isnurance number. Would he be able to claim JSA? Only issue is he has no bank account...? He was 18 in december last year? I jw
He would not able to claim JSA. He can't do anything before 18.

If your child wanted to go to university/stay on at college, wouldn't they have applied by now? My daughter has just taken her A levels, but we have a considerable paper trail (UCAS application/open day visits to universities adding up to over 1000 miles of travel) to prove her intentions, should anybody ask. I'd expect HMRC to be rather sceptical of anyone whose child developed a short-lived, evidence-light interest in further education at the point the tax credits were due to stop. Sorry :(
