Advice for 18 year old brother

My brother is leaving sixth form in May he's 18.
He has decided he doesn't want to do anymore education and wants a full time job. He's never claimed any benefits and obv has a national isnurance number. Would he be able to claim JSA? Only issue is he has no bank account...? He was 18 in december last year? I jw

  • My son was able to in similar circumstances. However, make sure he leaves and you inform child benefit before the 31st May, as otherwise they will continue to pay it until August and he will not be entitled to claim- nor will your parents be entitled to tax credits for him!
  • My 18 year old daughter finishes full time education in June but CTC goes on till August. I was told by JSA that she couldnt sign on till the week after the tax credits end. Is that right? I hear so much conflicting advice.

Usually they only continue until the August if the intention had been to go on to advanced (university for example) education. If that wasn't the case you should let TC know the date education actually ended, including any time for exams, or it will continue until August.

yes its right. you cant claim for her as a dependant xhild at the same time as she is claiming as an adult in her own right
  • Child benefit goes on until the end of August, TC won't unless she is going into higher ed or doing another year of further (retakes etc). She can't sign on until Child benefit ends and it won't be ended early unless she gets a job or leaves home. I'm afraid you will be looking at getting £20 a week for her until the end of August otherwise. Ridiculous situation but as far as I know there's nothing else available (more than happy to be contradicted on this one!)

Child Benefit stops straightaway if your child:
    • starts paid work for 24 hours a week or more
    • gets certain benefits (ie Income Support, Employment and Support Allowance, tax credits, Incapacity Benefit or income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance)

If he wants to leave college to get a job, why does he want to sign on?

You should be advising him to stay at college until he has a job, he can apply while in education. Then if something good does come up he can leave. Personally I would advise him to finish the year, he only has 2 months left and will hopefully have achieved some qualification that will improve his job prospects.

The fact he is leaving in the final months (you can work at 17) suggests that he justs wants to sign on and this could lead to a spiral of long periods of unemployment and a lack of qualifications.

But if she doesn't sign on until after August she won't be claiming in her own right.
