Advice for 18 year old brother

  • I'm well aware we can't get jsa and ctc/cb at the same time. But the tax credits told me I could carry on claiming tax credits until August and then if she hasn't found a job she could sign on when they end in August. You get conflicting advice from everyone including the people who are supposed to know.

its all to do with the end of the academic year.
that year ends in august, and so that is the end of your claim.
you can stop it sooner so that she can claim JSA but you will lose money if you do ( unless she manages to find a job)
  • So ctc won't stop in June when the course ends unless I ask them to stop it?

evactly. it will carry on until the last week of august when the academic year ends
as long as you receive cb you will be entitled to ctc

He will need to open a bank account in order to receive any wages, other than that I agree with all the other posts. You need to look at your CHB.
  • Hi,

This isn't about child benefit. he's not my son. This is a benefit enquiry for my 18 year old brother. He's leaving sixth form and doesn't want to continue education. He wants a full time job. But whilst he seeks a full time job he will have no money so we wanted to know with him going past 18 in December 2012..will he be allowed to claim JSA?/

Whilst child benefit is being paid for him he will be unable to claim JSA
When CB stops he should be able to claim income based JSA of £56.80 per week
  • my mother works full time and doesnt get child benefit for him

Is this because her income is over £60K? If not, why isn't she getting it? (or the father if separated?)
  • Well I've got my answer. Daughter finished college yesterday. Child Benefit goes on until the end of august but child tax credit stopped yesterday. Therefore only child benefit to feed her with until she either signs on or finds paid work (which ever comes first). Oh well!
