    Definition of universal
    adjective
relating to or done by all people or things in the world or in a particular group; applicable to all cases:

Therefore reasonable to assume it would work with Dell laptop. It doesn't. I lose £2. The end.

"3. applicable to or affecting many individuals, conditions, or cases; general"
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

So I'm unreasonable in believing a 'universal' laptop charger would work with one of the most popular computer manufacturers products???

    it would appear so
large manufacturers are more likely to use bespoke designs

Dell has a habit of not using standard parts in their machines. Whether they are better now, I dunno, but in past it had to be dell or not when replacing various things. Chargers come under that remit.

Whilst it's not rejected under the change of mind (different colour etc) it is a product you bought, but changed your mind as it's not suitable. You should have confirmed a return policy on something that you did not know would fit. Had you talked to the people, they're pretty knowledgeable, they may have said we don't know, or we could find out, gimmie a few mins, or even if it doesn't, bring it back in 7 days. At that point they could have even checked it with a dell laptop to see.

But you remained silent about it and did not ask, so it really is up to you being so late in taking it back, and you have to live with restock fee as per their terms and conditions of which you should have read. Ignorance in these T&C's is not a get out clause.

One thing I always bare in mind when it comes to "universal" adaptors for anything is, that I've yet to see one that actually is!
With anything like this you really need to ask the question specifically before purchasing unfortunately :(

Everything from the little multi voltage universal AC/DC adaptors you get to power your walkmam/Gameboy (if you're old enough), to the ubiquitous Universal Serial Bus have exceptions on things they don't charge either because they can't provide the right voltage/current or don't have the right physical connector*...
For example a normal powered USB hub should be able to power anything that takes a USB connection, except they don't - things like tablets and smartphones can require far more power than the USB standard allows!
IIRC Blackberry phones for a while have needed 700ma in some cases, and some of the tablets and smartphones need 1000ma, the USB spec requires a cut out one the current reaches 500ma (so there are loads of "high power" USB chargers etc that strictly speaking are no longer compliant with the USB 1 and 2 specifications).

*I've got a Universal adaptor I bought from Maplins years ago, which came with about 12 heads, and I still occasionally find it doesn't have the right connector.

Dell have switched to using a multi pin charger, two of the pins indicate to the laptop that it is an authentic charger and the laptop will run in "safe" (read degraded) mode if the signal isn't present on these pins.

I'd always recommend authentic chargers for laptops as the cheaper universal ones don't clean the power supply or necessarily guarantee the power level wont fluctuate beyond the laptops requirements.
