New owner what would have like to have known?

  • Try to have a think about anything that's a bit "eccentric" about your house. eg one of ours had two stopcocks for the water, right next to each other. We think the second had been installed because the first didn't work properly but it took a lot of trial and error to figure this out! We made sure to tell our buyer which one was the working one.

Oh and who the current energy/water suppliers are!
    I have a simple philosophy:

    Hi

I'm hoping to exchange on our house in coming weeks.

I would like to leave information on our home to the new buyers, i.e bin days, manuals for appliances in the home, heating instructions, utility providers.

So my question is when you moved into your home, be it rented or purchase what would you have liked to have known?

The buyers are quite local to the area, so know all about transport, doctors surgeries etc.

    Thanks

I wish I'd spoken to the neighbours before we bought our current house. Every one is nice but we've since found out our row of houses have had ongoing damp issues that no one seems to be able to remedy. Six years on we are still trying to sort out this problem.
    Good luck!

I hope the fish were in the fixture fitting list and not a surprise when you moved in!

Take a picture of gas electric and water meter readings when moving out or into a property and ring the suppliers within a few days of moving date. Register for council for council tax too. Don't rely on previous resident to give accurate readings.

Oh yes "Mr Ugly" (they named them all!) was 15 years old, so very big 'un.

Two years later we sold all the fish on ebay for about £100 (had first child and didn't want the safety issue!) I think the lucky winners fished out about 35 different koi and goldfish etc.

They all moved to a big pond in slough and a few weeks later the people emailed me that all the fish had survived and were thriving.

Well a left a little booklet for the new owners saying welcome to your new house, here's a few things we thought might help you etc along with all manuals for cookers, boiler, shower etc etc and it was very nice that the new owners had told the EA what we had left and thanked us for the information as it saved them searching for switches, keys etc.

    Good deed done :)

I would LOVE it if our Vendor did anything like this for us. We are FTBs in early/mid 20s and I know sweet FA about reading meters and boilers etc.
They have already provided us with who their water/gas/electricity suppliers are via the solicitors which is quite a formal approach (not complaining mind) so i'm assuming they're not going to do anything like put together manuals/instructions/bin dates. *sigh*

Just hope I don't break anything trying to figure out how to turn it on.....
