Maximising income - Mystery Shopping? Surveys? (Part Two)

I have a quick question about mileage expense for mystery shopping, sorry if it's been asked elsewhere but haven't had time to read through the whole thread!
When claiming for mileage, I've read that you can claim 40p per mile (for the first 10,000 miles in any tax year) to cover petrol and road tax, insurance, wear and tear on your car etc. This seems easier to work out than keeping receipts for petrol spent only on mystery shopping but at the same time seems quite high. For one shop I did recently it works out at over £12 when I only got paid £8, will the tax office query this?
Any advice gratefully received.0 -
Do I have to use a debit card or can I pay in cash? When I looked at these assignments in the past it asked if you had one of a list of cards but it doesn't any more.
I've done quite a few of these recently and the ones where you needed a POP or to buy something over £5, you could use cash. The ones where you have to post a padded envelope to somewhere, it states on the brief that you must use one of the debit cards.
You can always say you need the receipt for work, makes it sound more legit. Also this tends to be at the end of the assignment, so bit late for them to suss you out!
Don't forget to look on the counter window for a name badge as they're often stuck on there somewhere.
Good luck! You'll find it a lot less scary after the 1st one!0 -

annedunlop - i never heard back from gapbuster but had a email from them the other day with regard to a promotion. I went through a link on the page and it gave me the option for them to resend me my details. Low and behold i had been with them for three weeks and never knew. If you want to pm me your email address and i will send you the email and hopefully fingers crossed will work for you as well. :j cause it did for me and there are loads of places on their.

Southernginge, can you PM me that link too, please. I applied to gapbuster a while ago and have heard nothing back, even though I've added them to my safe senders, and scoured all my junk mail.
And just a thought on POP as receipts, for all the PO staff know, you're sending something you sold on Ebay. We've been selling quite a bit on Ebay lately, and I always tend to get receipts for POP without anyone worries.
Thanks!James

you drove 30 miles to do a shop  thats a bit far really isn't it?
Although talking of mileage i have a question, do you include the return travel or just travel to the location?
I tend to stick to under 5 miles though0 -

Don't forget, folks, this is a BUSINESS! You get wear and tear on your car on the outward journey and the return journey. You need to travel both ways to do the job - so of course you claim both ways!Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -

Well, where I live isn't really near anywhere so I have to travel a fair distance to most mystery shops. Yes, it was a bit far but I'm new to ms and want to gain some experience so thought I would take it. If I waited for jobs on my doorstep I'd wait a long time!0 -
Any one else having problems printing Gap assignments?
I've just printed one out that I'm doing tomorrow at a well-known independent mobile phone store and it took 14 pages, the last 6 of which were blank apart from "Page 9 of 14" "Page 10 of 14" etc at the top and the URL of the page at the bottom. Then at the very bottom of the last page in tiny letters it says "3G"  :mad:We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
