Be careful with swapping tyres front to rear.

It is considered by many to be advisable to have the tyres with more tread at the rear as this reduces the risk of dangerous oversteer.

But that is a contentious subject so do some research and make your own mind up.

    Also consult your car handbook.

For the average driver who doesnt race around corners and who is careful when roads are wet/flooded IMO its not going to make a noticeable enough difference where the new tryes are fitted.

My opinion is on the front is marginally better to aid emergency breaking.

    OP just buy one tyre

For 40 years plus I have put the best tyres on the driven wheels - on a fwd car, at the front for steering, traction and braking. In fact, it's only on this forum that I have heard otherwise. I have never had a problem with oversteer. Having said that, I always drive/ride to the conditions, and I replace tyres before they reach the limit.

    Unsupported statements don't help anyone.

Every tyre manufacturer states they should go on the rear.

Went for two new tyres. :)

Mainly because the Conti Prem Contact 2 is £68 (fitted) and doesn't rate as well as newer tyres that are cheaper. Got a pair of Dunlop Sport BluResponse, which seem to get good reviews, came to £122 (fitted) with special off of an MOT for a fiver. So I figured that's saved me £30-40 odd.

I'll probably just stick the newish front tyre on the rear, as the rears are about 3 yrs old (but still plenty of tread). As mentioned, I could always keep the spare one in shed in case of puncture.

Well thats the best advice - drive according to conditions!
  • I love the "cheap MOT" offers. If you get a cheap MOT, your car mysteriously has problems that wouldn't necessarily be there had you paid full price elsewhere :D

I've heard about sticking the better rubber on the rear (for a FWD) but mostly from track hooligans. I'd normally put it on the front, but am currently enjoying larking about on some horrendous cheap !!!!! that was on the car when I bought it. I am not wasting perfectly legal nearly new tyres, but instead an grinding them down as effectively as I can before I put some proper stuff on. Quite fun in the wet actually :o

No-one should be driving so close to the limit on a public road that it would make any difference
