Putting Name On Council Tenancy

If any of this is incorrect please feel free to inform me, any information will be helpful.

All my life our council house has been in my Mum and Dads name until my mum died. Removing the name counts as the one change you're allowed but I was wondering if there is any special circumstances, if there was any way I could put my name on it too?

Basically I want security for me and my Dad. I'm 25 and would like to move out but I can't as I don't want to leave my Dad, I don't trust the council to not evict him and he's not in the best of health either so leaving him alone all day would worry me to no end. And if anything happens to him at the moment I've been told I would have some time to get things together but I would be found somewhere else to live.

I would like to buy this house through RTB but with him being the only name on the tenancy he would have to be on the mortgage and he's 60 and unemployed so the odds of getting one are slim.

Is there anything I can do?

  • No, there isn't.

If he's in poor health have you looked into the availability of Local Authority sheltered housing for the elderly? Councils are usually quite keen to help people move out of proerties that are too big for them and many offer cash incentives plus help with moving expenses as well. You're only 25 so you should be able to look after yourself.

He's not in that poor of health he can walk around perfectly fine but just not for a long time as he had lung problems and gets short of breath.

He's only 60 but that's too old for mortgage lenders I think.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that another succession can take place in certain circumstances but I can't just leave it to chance and assume the council will do that.

Why would you think that the council would evict him?

Because he's an 'elderly' man on his own in a 3 bedroom house, what with under occupancy and bedroom tax going on it wouldn't surprise me if they came knocking saying there's a teenager with 2 kids that needs the house

I haven't asked him outright but knowing him he wouldn't want to go anywhere. Apart from form after form he'd have to fill in changing addresses on things, there's moving all of my stuff, his stuff, Mum's stuff we've kept and the rest of the house furniture. We don't have the money to hire anyone and we couldn't do it ourselves. Plus he's lived here for 25 years it's safe to say he's settled lol

Really? How sure are you about that is it confirmed anywhere?

The point still stands that I couldn't live anywhere else knowing here was here alone.

I understand what you mean, I know it's frowned upon on this forum which is why I'm always hesitant to ask about it. But I'd rather you not tar me with the same brush as people just wanting their foot on the property ladder.

There is more likelihood of your father being made homeless if he (you) bought the council house than if he stays as a tenant.

There are more things to go wrong when a mortgage is involved such as no/little help when you lose your job etc resulting in repossession & eviction.
