I generally receive positive comments and people are interested in my wins. At work everyone is fascinated by my wins and they're always intrigued to hear what I've won recently!

Most of the negativity comes from people saying things like "I don't know how you find the time" or "you must spend *ALL* of your time in front of a computer" (like I am some kind of saddo with no life!) or "you're so lucky" (this annoys me, as yes it's down to an element of luck, but I don't get handed it on a plate - it takes effort, commitment and dedication to enter comps)!

Comping is my wind down/relaxation time. I juggle it with being a single mum, working full time plus I also work out at the gym daily (which is a bigger addiction than my comping), I belong to a running club and I love photography! I don't know how I fit comping in, but I do and my quality of life is not compromised because of it. It irritates me that people imply that entering competitions means I'm a 'saddo' (well, that's how a 'few' people make me feel about it anyway) and that comping is all I do!

EDIT TO ADD: A lot of the people that say "Oh you must be sat in front of the computer *ALL* the time", actually probably just spend all their evening sat in front of the telly!
:T*Thanks to all who posts comps * :j

I'm the same as you BlueBella. Comping is a hobby but if someone asked what I did, I wouldn't say that I'm a comper.
I'm unable to work at the moment due to my disabilities but I would say to someone that comping is my job.

If someone asks what my hobbies are, then I include being a comper in that. My MIL though, has a habit of telling everyone that I enter competitions!

  • I've always been quite secretive about comping...I'm not ashamed, but I've always been a private person. I suppose the reason I started comping was because my family couldn't afford to have anything nice after my Dad was made redundant three years ago...now he's even more private than I am, and very sensitive about money and not being able to provide for the family, so I guess I kept it quiet because it was linked to him.

Having said that, comping is just a hobby for me, so I would probably only bring it up if asked.

When I won a holiday to South Africa last year, I only told my close friends it was a prize - they were amazed, one friend was like I cant believe youre not shouting this from the rooftops! They do still tease me to this day about my winning slogan though...all in good jest!

My secrecy about comping however is hurting me in the end - I never enter facebook competitions and I swear everytime I log on to MSE there seem to be more and more competitions on facebook and twitter and fewer through just company websites...do people have two facebooks? one for personal, one for comping? Is that allowed? I always thought the promoters would be able to tell you were just a comper and you'd never win any prizes
2013 goal: spa trip, holiday for my parents, ipad mini, clothes for my boyfriend and lots and lots of make-up for ME :happylove
  • Yes I saw that and wondered if she is one if us!

and yes I admit it. My Facebook and Twitter accounts give it away, but i have also given away a few prizes such as weekends away I couldn't make so I have to come clean :)

    Well done!! x
  • Well done! I'm not a compoholic, but I enjoy entering comps. Julie x

I am not surprised at the neg comments, its simply that others are Jealous and nothing more. They just want what you have but without having to put the effort in lol. I have a small and tight circle of friends and they are very very happy that I comp as they get to share in the fun of my wins. I have taken them to JLS (we are all in our forties lol) and a cosmo party where we got wonderfully tipsy on free drinks and have generally had a great time. I comp when I watch TV and if I am not comping my mum tell s me to get on with it as she get very excited when I win!!

i dont get any bad comments, but its a hobby and one i enjoy!
  • I comp frequently, but never share this 'publicly' nor would I ever tell someone I was a comper.

I dont believe that everyone is jealous of wins, but people do get pretty annoyed about their Facebook Timelines being clogged up. Personally I have blocked the updates of people who otherwise I like to hear from, because it's constant "Like and Share to win this fireplace", "Like and Share to win this banana" and it does look like people will do anything for a freebie, so I can totally understand why others see it as a waste of time.

So... I do it in secret ;)
