Do you admit to being a comper?

Hi, I was just watching The Chase on ITV and when today's contestant was asked 'What do you do?', she replied 'I am a comperholic - I like to win prizes so I enter to win everything I can!'

That got me thinking - apart from the fact that I don't like to use the term 'compoholic', I don't think I would even say that I am a 'comper' if I was ever asked what I do? At the moment I am not working but I wouldn't class my comping as my job - it is simply one of my hobbies or pastimes. So if I am asked what I enjoy doing in my spare time or what my hobbies are, I am happy to include comping as something I enjoy doing along with sewing and other crafts. I certainly wouldn't class my comping as 'my job' which is what this contestant today did. If she was working, I would have thought she would have said what her employment was but she said 'I am a compoholic'! I have always thought of 'oholics' as obsessed people - so I definately wouldn't admit to being a 'compoholic', especially on national tv! Just wondered what other compers thoughts were?

  • Yes I saw that and wondered if she is one if us!

and yes I admit it. My Facebook and Twitter accounts give it away, but i have also given away a few prizes such as weekends away I couldn't make so I have to come clean :)

LOL, wouldn't bother me our blue gal. I have thought of comping as part hobby/part income for a long time. And I often tell people that I am a dogaholic, so I guess I would hold hands up to being a compoholic too - although I have weaned myself off just a little lately. Not quite cold turkey, but perhaps a recovering one :D

I've only been comping a month and at first I was happy to tell everyone about my new hobby, though I did say it was a hobby and my mum was really supportive and thinks it's great but a lot of people I've told have been really snooty about it, I've had comments such as 'well is suppose if it's the only way you can afford something' and 'you didn't just enter that fb comp for chocolate did u'. when I told a friend I won a book her first reaction was what can you not even afford a book these days. Needless to say friend no more but I think I am more wary of who I tell and what I tell. Maybe that's just me though, I think if I was really successful at it and earned a lot from it and spent a lot of time on it i'd be quite happy to say it was a job x
Starting afresh - comping as much as poss!

Hoping for: some beauty goods, clothes, amazon vouchers, anime, manga, wardrobe, fridge freezer, laptop, an ipad, vouchers for next, exercise goods, a uk break and a wee hol somewhere nice!
    Wishing all a little luck:beer:

What stuck up, horrid sounding people.
I hope you win a massive all expenses paid 5* holiday somewhere now, or an ITV comp to really wind them up ;)
    Comping since Feb 2012.

Best wins - Pram, £800+ Baby equipment, Big  gadget bundle, Summer hamper, £500 worth Freeze 24/7 products, Sony Xperia Z, £200 worth tanning/beauty products.

Yes, I have had similar 'snooty' remarks made about my comping and wins in the past too now I don't bring my comping up unless I am talking about hobbies.

Luckily everyone who knows I am comper is well aware I don't have money to spend on luxuries and comping is a way to get these & by luxuries I mean books, non own brand toiletries (currently I'm using Murad from a win last summer - it's so concentrated you only use a tiny bit)

My kids were dismissive at first until they started getting bits & pieces & I won an ipod and an xbox

Wow! I've heard similarly before. I guess I would think twice if I'd had that sort of reaction. I'm lucky, I only ever remember having really positive responses. No wonder some of you hesitate to tell.

  • My name is Gordon and I am a Compaholic.

Not ashamed to admit it and proud of what I do - I work bl**dy hard and this is my relaxation after the kids are in bed - it makes my dreams better and gives me the chance to give my family things that I can't afford to buy...and has increased my fishing tackle collection past anything I could ever afford (thanks weeowens!!)

Anyone who reacts negatively to my comping 'habit' gets short shrift and actually I feel a bit sorry for them - what are they missing - like most of us on here I am lucky enough to be able to comp and watch tv/listen to the radio at the same time - how boring just to have watch tv on it's own in the evenings...

Wins are lovely but I really enjoy the entering/using my mind/dreaming and the banter on here and elsewhere too... with like minded people who are all just getting on with their own thing.... :);):)
:smileyhea Thank you to all that post comps - may the Comping Fairy return your time and generosity doubled!:smileyhea

Also, I just watched this, and she wasn't saying it was like her job. She is an admin manager for a seed company. The compoholic thing was in response to, "and what do you do in your spare time?" Does that make it any better :D XXXX
