Do you admit to being a comper?

  • When I first started I did tell people because I was so shocked on how many competitions that they are. Generally didnt have any idea!. Most freinds and family are great about it and I've got my dad into it aswell. I've really only had one negative experience about it, was out with a group of freinds having dinner. And one if the boys overheard me telling my best freind about a twitter win. He shouted ' can you please stop putting lots of crap on my Facebook newsfeed'. Everybody looked up, I very sarcastically replied sorry but if you don't like it you can either block my newsfeed or remove me. Generally speaking now the Facebook has calmed down because of them banning like and share. His face was quite a picture, when I informed him that I've won around £500 worth of wins in the past month. :)

When I worked in my last school as a TA, I won £1,000 with Pepsi max comp and I mentioned to a work colleague who I thought would be happy for me knowing my husband had just been made redundant. Instead they must have told everyone else and I had people coming up to me saying "been winning anything else lately? I don't know where you find the time!" They said it in a sarcastic way like I wasn't allowed to win! :o Like gojoroan said, this is my hobby, I don't get out to socialise or nights out much as most of my time is spent with my family. From now on I keep my 'hobbies' to myself! :p

Yeah but it's a hobby. It's not my career or what I'm passionate about. It goes into a big pile of other hobbies like travelling and eating out and writing and all the stuff that makes us more than just compers :)

reading the replies really cheered me up! have had a truly horrid couple of days capped off by my partner and my two year old twins having noro virus and was feeling really rotten before. My partner is a full time student nurse and works part time to make ends meet while I look after the girls and study from home, we really don't have a lot of money and work hard to make ends meet and make sure the girls are taken care off. I love comping though the prizes are often small they are things that we wouldn't normally have the money to buy and are little treats. But mainly I find it therapeutic, at night when the girls are in bed I put on knots landing and do my comps and forget about my worries and when i'm feeling down reading the chatter on here really does help.
Starting afresh - comping as much as poss!

Hoping for: some beauty goods, clothes, amazon vouchers, anime, manga, wardrobe, fridge freezer, laptop, an ipad, vouchers for next, exercise goods, a uk break and a wee hol somewhere nice!
    Wishing all a little luck:beer:

If I was winning regularly I'd be happy to call myself a comper but as I haven't really won anything since 2007 and I've sort of given up now & I don't use that term anymore :(

Gosh, I'm really surprised by some of the negative comments you lot have had.
I've only been comping since the beginning of March so not many of my friends knew I was doing it. But when I won my holiday I told pretty much everyone I knew, lol, and when people were asking how I managed to win a holiday I was honest about it. Maybe not totally honest about quite how many comps I enter in a day...:o
Now my sister has started comping as well, which probably would have bothered me before. What if she won more than me even though it was all my idea in the first place? Sibling rivalry and all that lol. But now that Ive had a pretty good win I don't mind if she does it too. :)
    Comping since March 2013

I've had a few negative comments, but I just put it down to jealousy to be honest. A lot of people only enter the occasional comp, once in a blue moon, and as a result rarely, if ever, win anything. So I think it bugs some people that others win so often. But, they have no idea of how many comps we're entering to get those wins.

I used to tell people what I won and have even given things away like weekends away, football tickets and such but because I won them in the first place people dont seem grateful and seem bitter that I won them in the first place, so I don't bother now. If I can't make something I just email back to say thanks but no thanks and hope some genuine nice comper gets it. I also used to tell people about my wins but used to get so many sarcastic comments that I dont bother now but it does annoy me whenever we do anything or go anywhere I get "is that a competition win"
I have entered many this year as have been busy with family but will have to find the time soon as I could do with some treats!! Good luck all and hope you get lucky xxx
  • Yes, I'm proud of it. I think anyone willing to put the effort into entering competitions deserves what they win.

I do feel embarressed if I use the term 'comping' though and have to make an effort to use the word competition instead of comp :D

May you all have lots of luck, Emma xx

My aunt was in my house on Saturday morning when the postie delivered my pur minerals cosmetics essentials set, which I am delighted with - and her response was

"oh for god sake, how do you win these competitions" as if I was doing something wrong

I answered her back in the same nippy tone with "because I enter them to win them"

I do try and keep it to myself but I like to tell my family when I have a good win, unfortunatley my Aunt is just turning into a miserable old git and is never happy :rotfl:
