Mrs Drink : I love your hearts! How did you make them? x

Cut strips of card/good quality paper in the following dimensions for each heart:
    black: 1 x 17cm long 2.5cm wide,
    White: 2 x 19.5cm long 2.5cm wide, & 2 x 25cm long 2.5cm wide
    Red: 2 x 22cm long 2.5cm wide, & 2 x 29cm long 2.5cm wide

Then take one of each sized white and red strips, lay them on top of each other in decreasing size, with one thin edge lined up so you have alternate white, red, white, red strips. Repeat with the other white and red strips so you have two piles. Then place these piles either side of the black so they are about half way down the black strip, and staple. Then bend the two halfs over so the other thin edge all meet at the bottom of the black strip. And staple.

To make 44 paper hearts I needed:
    4 A4 sheets of black
    19 A4 sheets of white
    22 A4 sheets of red

I know a lot of people will hate the idea, but like I said, we aren't into the traditional church/hotel wedding and fancy sit down meal with speeches. It's not us.
I will still be having cake (cupcakes) and I plan to do little favour bags and I will be wearing a wedding dress and my other half will wear a suit. That's as about as traditional as it gets though.

Let me know your opinions of an informal reception at home.

Sounds a great idea. In fact, it's very traditional, just not fashionable in recent times - wedding receptions at home (or the home of one of the sets of parents) were entirely normal for a lot of the time.

My mother and uncle both had their wedding receptions at my grandparents' home, with a huge tent in the garden. I'd say marquee, except that it wasn't a proper one, it was a massive tent they borrowed from a local golf club. I didn't attend my parents' wedding reception, for obvious reasons, but I was a bridesmaid at my uncle's wedding when I was 4.

    I love it!

I don't know if anyones mentioned (watching Masterchef at the same time) - but Tesco and sainsbury at least (probably all the others) will do wine/alcohol on sale or return.

    Take back anything left over.

Thanks, didn't even think of that! *Also watching Masterchef*
Our wedding isn't until May 2014 so we were considering buying our bottles of bubbly, spirits and cases of beer, cider etc at xmas time, as they seem to have a lot of good offers on alcohol at that time of year.

    Thanks! :)

OP, I think it is a wonderful idea. I'd much prefer to attend a wedding like yours than any of these over the top ostentatious things. Getting married is about committing yourself to the person you love, not look how much money we've spent.

I hope you enjoy planning it, and I hope you have a really lovely day when it comes.

This is exactly what I hoped people would think. We always knew we were going to do what made US happy and this would be it :)

There's nothing wrong with wearing your wedding dress to a bar, you'll get loads of drinks bought for you and you'll be the best dressed woman there, what's not to love! :D

(I once wore a wedding dress to a nightclub for a dare. Everyone thought I'd been jilted, I didn't have to buy a drink all night. And I came home with loads of phone numbers!!;))

Me and Mr B had our wedding reception at home (a one-bedroomed flat) and we had a whale of a time. Our friends and family managed to squeeze in, we had 5 toddlers there at one point all of which behaved impeccably, despite a few mucky handprints on the wallpaper, and as I got a little drunk, Mr B sat me on the sofa after everyone had left, made me a cup of tea and washed up and cleared everything away. That's why I married him!

Hope you have a lovely day! :T:T

If I didn't have 100 guests (big family who I really want all of them there) then I'd love to do this!

I had my reception at home - was a lovely sunny day and we had a marquee up in the garden and my Dad fired up the BBQ. A great time was had by all, the only downside was the clear up the day after!

I Definately think its a nice idea, though I would have to get people in to at least do the washing up, as I hate doing it at the best of times, so wouldn't want to do it on my wedding night!

We had a fairly alternative wedding (tho the venue was a traditional hotel setting) and I wore biker boots under my dress, our 1st dance was to metallica and even our DJ was nervous about our playlist for the "disco" as it was mainly rock and metal music!

But it suited our personalities and that was what was important to us, most people loved it, but there was a few who moaned about it not being traditional.
