I always think weddings should be personal to the Bride and Groom.

The people you invite should not hold a negetive opinion on your choice of reception venue.

Will you be wearing a wedding dress? I just wonder if the idea of going out to a bar in the evening in a wedding dress a bit strange.

I will be wearing a wedding dress but will most likely change out of it. However, when receptions are had in hotels, brides keep their dresses on for the disco, which, to me, is sort of the same thing. So maybe I'll keep it on. Only get to wear it for one day, might as well make the most of it.

I think that it's a lovely idea. It would be a lot of work for you though with food prep and tidying up. I like the other ideas about caterers who clean up too but what would the cost be like? I suppose you could buy several dinner services/ part dinner services from auction houses for cheaper than paper and plastic but do you have a dishwasher?
Sandwiches can be bought in buffet platters from wait rose and M&S too to cut your workload or you could just ask everyone to bring a platter of food.

We only have a few elderly grandparents who would be happy going home after the reception, so don't think I have any worries there. AND this is Northern Ireland we're talking about. You're never too poor for a drink :P

Are there any nice bars where you could book a private room? There are lots here where it doesn't cost you any extra as long as you can guarantee numbers. It might make it feel more special and like part of the wedding and it would stop random drunks annoying you.

I think it sounds lovely, romantic, straight from the heart, full of love, perfect:D

    Aww thank you :)

We do feel that restaurants, hotels etc can be too impersonal and can take away from what its really about; starting a new life with the person you love and celebrating that with people you care about and who care about you. Traditionally it's always about other people's needs and what they will want to eat and how much money you spend and how grand your dress is. We just want to show our love, and love doesn't cost anything ( not usually anyway..)
  • Hi, Sounds like a great idea!
We got married in a register office and had the reception in a marquee (that my uncle borrowed from the local scouts) in mum's garden. My aunt did the flowers, Mum & I decorated the tables/marquee with balloons and flower arrangements. My sister and cousin helped prepare all the food. DH built a bar & his bestman paid for 2 bar tenders for the day. After that the guests helped themselves. We hired glasses from the local off licence. My brother set up a sound system to play music. In total we had about 200 guests & they all had a fabulous time.

Whilst we were away on honeymoon DH's friend came in & shampooed all Mum's carpets in the house. They came up so clean, you wouldn't have known what had taken place there :D

A reception at home is what the posh crowd always do so it's very traditional in certain circles! Wills and Waitey Katie didn't go to a wedding venue did they!:rotfl:

I think it would be great fun to go off to a bar in your wedding dress later. It'll turn a few heads and make you feel good.

We love the idea of personal touches, of having our nearest and dearest in our home to celebrate our marriage. I would be happy enough to make the food myself( LOVE cooking) along with some help from mothers, sisters etc. And it could be laid out by a family member just before everyone arrives, lots of drinks in the fridge.

It's more meaningful to us than going to a restaurant that we could go to anytime.

    Thanks for the replies guys!

Make sure the guys do their fair share too!;) When we had a huge family millennium bash they went off to France to buy bubbly and generally saw to all the drinks side. And again, all the best chefs have their sous chef to skivvy for them.

    Hope it all goes well.

    That's a great idea :)
I'll have to check that out. But the place we would be going is quite a high end bar so not generally a lot of drunkards, just a lot of people having a good time and a bit of a boogie :)
