What Did Thatcher Ever Do For Us?

Thatcher did divide folk into those who wanted to help themselves and those who did not. (I was the former not the latter), I suspect the folk full of venom for her fall into the latter.
I wonder what she would make of the needing to be spoon fed generation we have now?
I too am in the former class, it wasn't Thatcher, it is,was, a pre ingrained mindset that I am sure the majority already possess.
Why do they need to be spoon fed?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

High tax rates are wrong. But your point was about taxes never reducing. Well, they did.
Not under Labour , perhaps, but certainly under other Governments.
The proportion of tax I pay has never reduced it just changed name. I don't dispute that for a few it has."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

In reply to JJ's earlier question Exchange Controls were removed the day after I finished reading the 3 large and very heavy books that contained all of the rules and regulations....in 1981 I think.
It was probably the highest factor in ushering in the Banking boom in this country that followed, far more significant than the Big Bang ever was, and was a clear signal of intent from the Thatcher Government.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -
I would like to thank dryhat for the photos of the first two cars I owned, a Hillman Avenger and then an Austin Allegro, quickly followed (very quickly) by a Fiat 128 Sport.
I had tried to forget this phase of my motoring life, but now it has resurfaced.....please don't tell my kids 'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

It is a Morris Marina.;)
The Marina has been described by Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson as one of the worst cars of all time, although it was one of the most popular cars in Britain throughout its production life, narrowly beating the Ford Escort to 2nd place in the UK car sales table in 1973[4] and regularly taking 3rd or 4th place.[5]

Sociology seems to be the academic face of Marxist thought AFAICS.
Sorry to take 4 pages before coming back on this one. Sociology is quite a useful subject, I took it at A level and really enjoyed it.
There are plenty of schools of sociology that aren't based in Marxism, for example Weber wasn't a Marxist. Feminism, postmodernism and functionalism are examples of other schools.
As one of my tutors later put it, Marxism is a useful prism through which we can critique the capitalist system, unfortunately while great at pointing out capitalism's shortcomings, it offers little in terms of answers. His theory was that true communism couldn't exist due to human interest and greed. Seeing what we're seeing in terms of Russian oligarchs and powerful cadres in China with lots of money, that's hard to argue against. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? We had to pay poll tax, even though we had no jobs and were at University. There was YTS, 37 hours a week for £40 wages?. We had free education and a grant to go to University.
Now people cannot afford houses, have to pay a fortune to go to University and will retire later. Also benefits are a lifestyle choice, human rights and many more foreigners in the UK. Things have got much better if your a none worker, much more competitive and costly if you want to get on.
Helped reduce union power, but destroyed much of the UK's industry as a result.0 -
In reading the many tributes (and the odd outpouring of hatred) towards Lady Thatcher, I thought it might be interesting to look at some of her less recognized achievements. We all know that 'she won' the Falklands and about privatization. What about some of the other stuff?
In the spirit of your question:
"A chemical research team in Britain (of which a young Margaret Thatcher was a member) discovered a method of doubling the amount of air in ice cream, which allowed manufacturers to use less of the actual ingredients, thereby reducing costs".
